Adam Day, from East Hull, found the the 20-carat gold medieval bishop's ring while searching a farmer's field near Beverley Minster.

It's due to be auctioned later this month and Adam Staples, from auctioneers Hansons, says medieval jewellery usually commands a high price because of its rarity and historical value.

Last summer, a unique 15th Century sweetheart brooch, believed to belong to English nobility and featuring similar floral patterns to the bishop's ring, sold for £20,800.

It's a superb example of the craftsmanship of the time. Only high-ranking figures such as bishops or nobility would have been able to afford a ring of such high quality, featuring fine decorative engraving and faceting."

The campaign is calling for parents to limit the amount of snacks to two 100-calorie portions a day.

Half of the sugar which young children in England consume comes from unhealthy snacks and sweet drinks, figures show.

On average, primary school children have at least three sugary snacks a day, Public Health England found.

The director of public health for East Yorkshire, Dr Tim Allison, says retailers, food manufacturers and parents all have a responsibility to help cut down on the intake of sugar.

    Quote Message

It's the responsibility of the manufacturers to be clear about what sugar is in their products. Retailers as well should be marketing stuff which is clear in what it contains. It's also our responsibility to look at what we're eating."

Adam says he knew immediately that the ring was something special: "I was shaking when I found it. It was quite close to the surface, not buried deep in the ground."
