  1. New sculpture for Willerbypublished at 10:54 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    A new sculpture is being installed in the middle of a Willerby roundabout today.

    A tall viking ship and weather vane is being put at the roundabout at the junction of Kingston Road and Gorton Road.

    It'll be unveiled to the public in full on Saturday 13 January 2018.

  2. Beverley bookshop to closepublished at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    A famous second-hand bookshop in Beverley is closing down.

    The Beverley Old Bookshop on Dyer Lane will shut in March when owners Hettie and Colin Tatman (pictured) retire.

    They've tried for nine months to find a buyer for the second-hand book business, without success.

  3. City of Culture artist in residence work on displaypublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    Work by the UK City of Culture's disabled artist in residence goes on show at the Artlink centre for community arts in Hull today.

    Jason Wilsher-Mills, who's from Sleaford in Lincolnshire, helped people in Hull with learning disabilities tell their stories through art during 2017.

    That inspired some of Jason's own work, which uses technology to help explore the issues that affect people with disabilties.

    Humberside Police are trying to find 15-year-old Harry Foster who was last seen on Thursday at about 19:30 on Ella Street in Hull.

    He was wearing black tracksuit bottoms, a dark hoodie and black trainers.

  5. Strike action hits rail services againpublished at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    There's more strike action on Northern trains this morning as staff walk out for the third day this week.

    There was disruption for passengers when RMT members took industrial action on Monday and Wednesday.

    It's part of the long-running row over the role of guards.

    RMT union members at Northern, South Western Railway (pictured), Merseyrail and Great Anglia are taking part in the action.

  8. Rail strikes hit Northern services todaypublished at 06:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2018

    Fresh strikes are expected to cause more disruption for rail passengers in the latest 24-hour walkout over safety.

    RMT union members at Northern, South Western Railway, Merseyrail and Great Anglia are taking action for the third time in less than a week.

    The union says scrapping guards and introducing driver-only operated trains risks passenger safety.

    But the rail companies have insisted the move is safe and already widely used.

    The weather tonight will be mostly dry and rather cloudy with an increasing risk of mist and fog.

    Minimum temperatures of 3C (37F) with a light and variable wind.

    Tomorrow will be another mostly dry but rather cloudy, with mist and fog lifting in most places allowing some brighter spells.

    There will be a light or moderate southeast wind and highs of 7C (45F).

  11. Officers keep jobs despite punching and kicking manpublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    Two police officers have kept their jobs, after being caught on CCTV punching and kicking a man who was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

    A sergeant and another police officer were found guilty of gross misconduct and of using excessive force following an internal police enquiry.

    The victim, 27-year-old David Prosser was shocked when he saw the CCTV footage and has now received a five figure settlement from the force.

    Humberside Police admit the standard fell well below what they expect and they held a full investigation and disciplinary hearing for the two officers involved.

    No criminal complaint was made at the time and the internal inquiry concluded that whilst both officers should receive final written warnings, the evidence did not meet the threshold for a dismissal.

  12. New trust takes over running of Goole Academypublished at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    The organisation that will take over the running of the Goole Academy has been confirmed as the Delta Academies Trust.

    It follows the collapse of the Wakefield Academies Trust (WCAT) back in September.

    WCAT asked the Department for Education to find a new sponsor for all of its 21 academies, saying it didn't have the capacity to improve the schools it ran.

    The Delta Trust, which runs 43 academies, will now meet with parents to talk about how they plan to make rapid improvements in the school.

  13. Inquiry into why historic buildings are being left to rotpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    A public inquiry is to be held into the lack of development on a number of key pieces of land in Hull.

    In May, a government inspector will look at the former Lord Line and Clarence Mill sites, both which have seen planning applications which have amounted to nothing.

    Owner, the Manor Property Group, will have to prove that progress is being made to develop the two areas.

  14. Calls for MPs to debate Daily Mail banpublished at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    The Cleethorpes MP has called for a parliamentary debate on Virgin Trains' ban on stocking the Daily Mail.

    The company says its staff have raised concerns about the paper's views on issues like immigration, gay rights and unemployment.

    The Conservative MP Martin Vickers told the Commons that the ban was unacceptable.

    A service has been held to mark the 50th anniversary of one of the worst disaster's in Hull's fishing heritage.

    Fifty eight men died when three trawlers sank in heavy seas in 1968, prompting a widespread review into safety across the industry.

    An East Yorkshire woman has been reunited with her engagement ring a year after losing it during a Civil War re-enactment.

    Debbie Newton was on her way home to Rawcliffe after playing an artillery officer in Buckinghamshire, when she realised her ring had gone.

    As reported by The Express, Mrs Newton failed to find the ring a month later in September 2016, but tried again in December 2017 with a metal detector.

    The 61-year-old said she was "totally amazed" by the find in Newport Pagnell.

    "The metal detector made a sound, so we dug up a large bit of earth and broke it down," she said.

    "We got down to a very small piece of earth and thought it was a bottle top, but it was my ring."

    Mrs Newton said the discovery was "unbelievable", especially as the ring was in "perfect condition".

    During the two-hour search, along with her husband, John, and their metal detectorist friend, they also found 51p in change, part of a necklace and "many bottle tops".

    Don't forget there is a third day of train strikes taking place tomorrow, across Northern Rail services.

    The strikes have been organised by the RMT Union against plans for driver only trains.

    The advice is to check if your train is running, external before you head out in the morning or if a replacement bus service is being put on instead.

    You're also being advised to allow extra time for journeys.

  20. Wildlife is being killed by hare courserspublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    During the last two months there have been over 200 cases of hare coursing, external reported to the police in this area.

    Around 150 of those were in East Yorkshire and the remaining 50 in northern Lincolnshire.

    Hare coursing is when a hare is chased and caught by dogs. Bets are often placed on which dog will make the kill.

    Last week an operation by Humberside Police caught a number of men suspected of hare coursing in the Preston area of Holderness.

    Police say anyone caught hare coursing could be fined up to £5,000.
