    As BBC Radio Humberside says a final farewell to medium wave, radio enthusiast and listener Richard Broadley spoke to me about his love of the wireless.

    With over 200 radios, the pensioner from Elstronwick near Burton Pidsea says despite his collection he thinks the switch-off is a good thing and it's time to move on.

    The MW transmitter was turned off at 12:00 today, marking the end of an era.

    The BBC say fewer people were listening to the frequency and were switching to alternatives like FM, digital, online and Freeview.

  3. The areas where house prices rose fastest in 2017published at 13:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    North East Lincolnshire saw the highest rise in house prices in our area over the last year, according to figures from the Halifax.

    North Lincolnshire saw an increase of 3.7%, the East Riding of 3.3% and Hull saw a price rise of 3.1% in the last 12 months.

    The Halifax says homeowners in the East Midlands and Wales saw the value of their properties rise faster than anywhere else in the UK last year.

    Four areas which still have lower prices than a decade ago are the north of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

    In the Yorkshire and Humber region, first time buyers are thought to be about 29 and have a deposit of about £18,675.

    Scunthorpe United say they are hopeful of formally completing the loan deals for Ivan Toney (left) and Ryan Yates (right) later today.

    The players are with the club now but the paperwork needs to be signed-off for all parties.

    Meanwhile Graham Alexander (pictured below) says they’re still pursuing another right back but are only making inquiries right now and don’t have any firm offers on the table for any player.

    Alexander also dismissed recent reports linking them with Limerick’s Chiedozie Ogbene. He told us they have no plans to sign the player.

    The Iron boss also says they have no fresh injury worries for this weekend.

    Captain Rory McArdle has been training with the squad since last week and is in contention to return.

    Four people have been released under investigation after a police raid on a travellers' site in Brigg.

    Earlier this week officers made a number of arrests, one in connection with modern day slavery offences, another on suspicion of money laundering and two on suspicion of growing and supplying drugs.

    Humberside Police say their enquiries are continuing, external.

  7. University of Hull to reduce its plastic wastepublished at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    The University of Hull is among institutions aiming to cut its plastic waste.

    It's as the government unveils long term plans to protect the environment and cut plastic waste within 25 years.

    The university will stop using plastic straws and will use recyclable ones instead.

    It also says it will be introducing more measures to reduce the plastic they use.

    The moves are also being welcomed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust which says we all have a part to play in keeping our beaches and marine environments free from plastics.

    Hull Kingston Rovers Coach Tim Sheens has cooled talk of signing a contract extension at the club anytime soon.

    Chairman Neil Hudgell told us last year that they wanted to offer him a longer deal after he helped guide them back to Super League.

    Sheen's present contract is due to expire in 2019 but he says he doesn't want to speculate and that it is a personal matter for him and the club.

  9. Plan to rehome squatterspublished at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    A company whose building was taken over by squatters in Hull over Christmas says it has agreed a plan with the people staying there in order to help them into more secure accommodation.

    MRC Estate & Letting Agents had planned to turn their property on Baker Street into new offices, but suffered a setback when a group called Activists for Love moved in.

    The company says it is now working with the group and also a community project called Raise the Roof in order to set up a new support centre to help the people currently in Baker Street.

  10. It's 50 years since the triple trawler tragedypublished at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    People stood looking at the Fisherman's memorial.

    People will gather to mark the 50th anniversary of one of the worst disasters in Hull's fishing heritage today.

    Three boats sank in heavy seas and 58 men were lost in the triple trawler tragedy in 1968.

    Wreaths will be laid at the city's Fishermans' memorial this morning.

    Some of the worlds largest batteries could be coming to Yorkshire.

    Drax Power station near Goole is looking at switching from coal to gas and is asking people what they think of the idea to install huge batteries.

    The plans go on show in Selby later this month and a consultation continues until the end of February.

  12. 'Giant Bradley' to get a make-overpublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2018

    A life-size statue of the tallest Englishman ever will be taken down in Market Weighton today.

    William "Giant" Bradley was 7ft 9in tall and lived in the town around 1800.

    His wooden statue is being taken away for repairs.

    Today is the last day you can hear BBC Radio Humberside on medium wave.

    Fewer people are listening on MW and are switching to alternatives such as FM and digital radio, as well as to Freeview and online.

    The BBC says it needs to assess which technology represents the best value for money.

    The transmitter will stop broadcasting from noon.

    An investigation into a fire at Scunthorpe steel works is under way.

    There was an explosion at the Appleby coke ovens yesterday, but nobody was injured.

    British Steel says it is working with the emergency services to find the cause of the incident.

  18. Prisoner sentenced for attacking guardpublished at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2018

    A prisoner who attacked a guard at HMP Humber has been jailed for 16 months.

    CCTV footage of the incident shows Reece Bayliss, 25, hitting the guard with an improvised weapon before being wrestled to the floor and restrained by security staff.

    Bayliss, of Glenhills Boulevard, Leicester, was sentenced at Hull Crown Court on Monday after he admitted charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and criminal damage.

    According to reports he was serving a sentence imposed in 2016 for drugs offences.

  19. Man accused of robbery in Grimsby to face trialpublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2018

    A Grimsby man's been in court today charged with robbery and possessing an imitation gun, external.

    Kye Green, who's 29 and of no fixed abode was arrested in connection with a robbery at a shop on Broadway in Grimsby on Monday and a takeaway in King's Road in Cleethorpes the previous Friday.

    He's also been charged with possessing an imitation gun, stealing a car and an attempted robbery in Weelsby Street in Grimsby in December.

    Green was remanded into custody after appearing at Grimsby Magistrates Court today and will face trail at Grimsby Crown Court in February.

  20. Investigations continue into Buckton deathpublished at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2018

    The police say they are continuing to investigate the death of 52-year-old Carol Camm in Buckton near Bridlington.

    She was found dead in a house on Main Street in Buckton before Christmas.

    On New Year's day a 56-year-old man, who had been questioned about her death and was believed to be her partner, was found dead in the same property.

    Detectives say investigations are continuing.
