    Rough sleepers in Grimsby and Cleethorpes have told the BBC they've been kicked and spat at as they slept in doorways.

    Their comments come just a day before new figures are due to be released showing how many people are living rough across the UK.

    It's believed there are about 40 rough sleepers in North East Lincolnshire.

    Cadey Ryley, from Shoezone, on Peters Avenue in Cleethorpes, says the number of rough sleepers has certainly grown - so much so that it's affecting business in the town:

    East Yorkshire's Kyle Edmund will try to extend his remarkable Australian Open run and reach a first Grand Slam final when he takes on Marin Cilic on Thursday.

    The 23-year-old Briton, from Beverley, ranked 49th, plays sixth seed Cilic in the Melbourne night session at 08:30 our time.

    Edmund is only the sixth British man to play in a major singles semi-final since tennis went professional in 1968.

    Thomas Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open champion, practised with Edmund 24 hours before the semi-final and believes he's looking in good form:

    It's being claimed that London gets two-and-a-half times more government money for public transport than Yorkshire.

    Figures released by a research team from the IPPR North think-tank, external show more than £4,000 is spent on roads and rail in London per person, compared to £1,600 in our region.

    However, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling claims per person spending is higher in the north west than the south east when local transport schemes are taken into account.

    Mr Grayling says he is "very happy to stand up and be counted on our record for transport for the north".

    But the former Deputy Prime Minister and ex-Hull MP John Prescott says the north is still struggling to have its say:

    A couple who were trapped for hours after a tree fell on their house and damaged two cars have told the BBC it could have been worse.

    The tree hit Eileen and Keith Samford's house in Scartho at about 07:00 today.

    It bounced off and landed on their neighbour's two cars, writing them off.

    Yorkshire and the Humber has the lowest level of investment in transport of any part of the UK, according to the IPPR North think-tank

    A study released today, external finds that the Yorkshire and Humber region gets £840 per person, compared to more than £4,000 per person in London.

    The organisation said the disparity "should be a significant concern".

    Responding, the government has called the findings "completely misleading".

  8. Grimsby homeowners stuck in house after tree fallpublished at 11:58 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2018

    People living in a house in Grimsby were stuck in their home for several hours after a tree came down during high winds earlier.

    It happened at about 07:00 this morning in Scartho after the tree hit the house and bounced off.

    It landed on two cars which have both been written-off as a result.

    The couple who were trapped have now been able to get out of their house.

    First Hull trains has announced cancellations to their afternoon and evening service.

    The 13:48 service from London Kings Cross to Hull and the 17:10 train from Hull to London Kings Cross has been cancelled.

    The 19:11 train from Hull to London Kings Cross will be terminated at Peterborough and the 20:30 London Kings Cross to Hull will be started at Grantham.

    People in Hull are being asked for their thoughts on how GP services can be improved.

    The Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is looking at things like making more appointments available outside normal working hours.

    Dr Dan Roper, chair of the CCG, has told the BBC they want to make it easier for people to see a doctor when they want:

    Unemployment in Yorkshire and the Humber region has gone up.

    Figures for September to November show a rise of 6,000 in the region.

    The total number of people out of work across Yorkshire and the Humber region is 134,000.

    Nationally, unemployment fell by 3,000 to 1.4 million.

    Figures just released also show that pay grew slightly faster in that time.

    There's concern over the future of a swimming pool near Hedon in East Yorkshire.

    The pool's owned by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the South Holderness technology college used to contribute to it's running costs, but they've decided to stop swimming lessons as it's not a requirement on the curriculum.

    The East Riding of Yorkshire Council says they'e aware the school can no longer contribute to the running cost of the sports facilities but they say it's still open to the public for the foreseeable future.

    Senior Coach at South Holderness Swimming Club, Harold Rudd says it's unclear what this will mean for the future of the pool.

    There are calls for the council to invest in Hull's Queens Gardens to make it more attractive for people to come and use the space.

    Councillor Colin Inglis says many lights are out due to ageing cabling, seats are damaged and parts of the outer wall have structural issues.

    Hull City Council says it carried out repairs to broken pathways and benches when it installed the Solar Gate sculpture last year and hopes the remaining work will be completed by 2019/2020 as part of a wider Heritage Action Zone scheme.

    A third person has been charged as part of a murder investigation in Grimsby.

    Tony Richardson, 45, died in hospital after an incident on Old Market Place over a week ago.

    Gary Clarke, who is 34, has been charged with assisting an offender and will appear before magistrates today.

    Married couple Marc and Sarah Finnie, from Sutcliffe Avenue, appeared in court yesterday.
