  6. Watch: Hospital parking charges debatepublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

MPs are calling for hospital car parking charges to be abolished, branding them a "tax on sickness".

    Martin Vickers

Data obtained in December showed hospitals in England made a record £174m in parking charges in just a year.

Speaking in a debate in the Commons this afternoon, Martin Vickers (pictured), the Conservative MP for Cleethorpes, has urged the government to tackle the issue:

    Quote Message

It needs government action. It is unreasonable to expect trusts...they've got very major challenges of their own and an extra burden such as this is something they could well do without."

    Martin Vickers, Cleethorpes MP

However, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust has responded by saying parking charges go towards helping patients:

    Quote Message

The income from car parking in 2016-2017 was £2.28m and after costs were deducted there was a surplus of £750,000, which was spent on patient care."

  8. Is Hull's 'new Banksy' a homage to city's famed 'Dead Bod'?published at 15:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

The original Banksy shows the same girl with a blue bird, though that bird was rather more alive.

Banksy or not, the Hull version seems to reference the now famous Dead Bod graffiti which became a landmark for ships on the Humber and is now on display at the Humber Street Gallery.

Banksy's keeping quiet on this one, which could mean it's a fake after all - but the buzz it has created around the city remains real!

  11. Analysis: Super Moon partly behind flood warningspublished at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

Flood warnings have been issued for parts of the coast in North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

    Flooding in ScarboroughImage source, Reuters

The warnings have been issued in part because of the high tide caused by the super Moon which some of us saw last night.

This tide, caused by the combined gravitational pull of the moon and sun, moves down the east coast from north to south, and is being exacerbated by the current weather conditions.

Firstly, low pressure in the North Sea lifts the sea surface slightly.

Secondly, the strong to gale force northwesterly wind, blowing in the same direction as the tide, adds to its height.

In fact, conditions are not dissimilar to those of 31 January 1953, when a catastrophic tidal surge affected the east coast and the Low Countries.

Thankfully, nothing on that scale is expected in the next 24 hours.

  12. Hull MP's plea over hospital parking chargespublished at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2018

Hull West and Hessle MP Emma Hardy

The motion, by Labour's Emma Hardy, which is backed by Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers, will be debated in the Commons with a vote taking place later this afternoon.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust says money generated by parking fees is reinvested into services.

Duncan Taylor, from the trust, says: "It is important for us to be able to manage the issue of parking across our hospital sites for the benefit of all car park users, ensuring people park safely and appropriately while maintaining access for emergency vehicles, and there is a cost involved in this."

    Quote Message

The income the trust earns from its 3,500 parking spaces across Castle Hill Hospital and Hull Royal Infirmary is generated from a combination of staff, visitors, and patients using the car parks, with money being reinvested into hospital services, including ongoing car park maintenance and security."
