  9. Big set-back for major marina projectpublished at 15:57 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

Plans for a major re-development of Bridlington Harbour are being put on hold because they're too expensive.

    Bridlington harbour

East Riding Council and Bridlington harbour commissioners wanted to create a new marina for leisure boats.

The plans were for the commercial fishing fleet to have stayed in the existing harbour.

A study found the work would cost around £115m, which would be difficult to raise in the current financial climate.

The leader of the council says it is disappointing, but they will explore alternatives.

    Quote Message

It is with a heavy heart that the decision has had to be made to put this game-changing project on hold. However, too much progress has been made in recent years for us to sit and dwell on this disappointing news, so the council and the commissioners have decided to seize the opportunity and look at other ways in which we can work together to help regenerate this important part of the town.”

Stephen Parnaby OBE, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council

    Diana Princess of Wales Hospital

It affects both Scunthorpe General Hospital and Grimsby's Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in key departments such as cardiology, ear nose and throat and ophthalmology.

The problem has been largely blamed on an electronic administration system as well as staff turnover.

The trust confirmed the letters will be issued by the end of February.

    Quote Message

I would like to apologise for any anxiety caused and reassure patients that we are taking decisive action to address the backlog of letters that built up after the final sign-off stage of the electronic system was not completed in some cases."

  19. Will time be called on Haxey Hood pub site?published at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

The ancient game of the Haxey Hood may be started by The Fool (pictured) but is it a fool's game to keep a local pub running for one busy day a year?

    The Haxey Hood fool

Participants say the lack of pubs in the area is putting the annual event in jeopardy.

Plans to turn the Duke William pub into homes have been withdrawn but the parish council will consult with residents tonight on the building's fate.

Its closure leaves just two participating pubs in the annual event which has been taking place since the 14th century.

Planner Mark Simmonds says it was losing money:

    Quote Message

The Duke William is losing money. We can't see that it is justified to keep a pub open for 365 days of the year to serve one event on one day. However much it's loved by local people, no business can operate on that basis"

    Mark Simmonds, North Lincolnshire Council
