    Members of the University and College Union say proposed changes to their pension scheme could see lecturers losing as much as £10,000 a year.

    On Tuesday an agreement reached by university union leaders and employers to end the pensions dispute was turned down by strikers.

    A three-man British expedition team, which includes a man from East Yorkshire, has set a new speed record for an unsupported crossing of the world's largest frozen lake.

    Scott Gilmour covered 397 miles in 12 days 21 hours and 13 minutes across Lake Baikal in Siberia.

    The team had to cope with strong icy winds and temperatures of -35C (-31F).

    There are plans for extra police to be drafted in for Lincoln City's local derby with Grimsby Town at Sincil Bank this weekend.

    The added security announced by Lincolnshire Police is in light of violent scenes at the Mariners' match on Saturday.

    Fighting broke out between rival fans inside and outside the ground.

    It's hoped the added security will deter any trouble in Lincoln this weekend.

    Campaigners say they're confident a new pier will be built at Withernsea after a study, funded by the National Lottery, concluded the project was feasible.

    The new pier would be built on the same site as the original one (pictured), which was demolished at the start of the last century.

    The Withernsea Pier Association says it's hoping to build the new pier in stages as money becomes available.

  10. Big rise in number of secondary schools in deficitpublished at 08:00

    The number of council-run schools operating at a loss in the Yorkshire and Humber region has trebled in four years, according to a new study.

    The region had the second highest proportion of council-run schools in deficit between 2016 and 2017, with the number standing at 33%.

    The Education Policy Institute has looked at more than 1,100 secondary schools over seven years.

    The figure includes council-run schools only.

    The area with the highest proportion of schools in deficit between 2016 and 2017 was the south west, with the number standing at 35%.

    A police officer has been sacked for using money from a club for his own purposes and having a police interview tape he was not entitled to.

    The legally-qualified chair ruled Pc Neil Giles had used the funds of a club for his own purpose and possessed a master interview tape when there was no reason for doing so amounting to gross misconduct.

    The chair also ruled that he had accessed police systems for a non-policing purpose which amounted to misconduct.

  15. Council confirms plans to build 850 new homes in east Hullpublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 15 March 2018

    Hull City Council has announced that they will try to acquire land on the East Bank of the River Hull in order to build 850 new homes.

    The council will enter a contract with Homes England to secure nearly £6m worth of funding to build 117 affordable homes and 733 other buildings.

    Part of the funding will be used to buy the former Clarence Mill and the Northern Divers sites.

    A motion put forward to reverse cuts to Hull's public health budget has been voted down by councillors.

    The motion was put forward by the Liberal Democrat group, who suggested the Labour-led council should put less into the reserves, in order to avoid reducing spend in areas such as drug, alcohol and sexual health services.

    Lib Dem leader Mike Ross says he's disappointed at the decision especially when council tax is going up.

    The council's deputy Leader Daren Hale says the savings were unavoidable following millions of pounds worth of government cuts and says their reserves needed bolstering

    The managing director of Transpennine Express Leo Goodwin has agreed to meet with Hull's MPs.

    It's after the rail company was strongly criticised by the Local Government Minister, Jake Berry, in Parliament for failing to turn up to a meeting to discuss changes to rail travel in the area.

    Transpennine want to increase the number of stops on the Hull to Manchester train service.

    The train company says it would only add a few minutes extra on to journey times and enhance the service.

    Grimsby Town have signed former Coventry, Birmingham and Scunthorpe forward Gary McSheffrey on a deal until the end of the season.

    The 35-year-old was a free agent after leaving National League side Eastleigh in November.

    He could make his debut for the Mariners in Saturday's trip to Lincoln.

    A report out today has looked at how successful Hull's year as City of Culture for 2017 has been.

    Here are some of the figures:

    • There were more than 2,800 activities, installations and exhibitions during the year-long cultural celebration
    • Younger audiences aged 16-34 years old were under-represented at events, though there was a high representation of people aged 55-64
    • The 800 new jobs created since 2013, in the visitor and cultural sector, were a result of £220m investment "fully or partly attributable" to the City of Culture award
    • There was a "significant increase" in arts and culture participation and a new confidence in the city
    • About 2,4000 volunteers provided an estimated 337,000 hours of help
    • Annual visitor figures are expected to see a 1.3m increase on 2013, when Hull was chosen to be city of culture
