  1. Ice cream on campus during protest about cutspublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 18 April 2018

    Katy Austin
    BBC Look North, Business Correspondent

Many students at Hull College spent their dinner break protesting against planned staffing cuts and changes to some courses, which they believe will be damaging.

Staff who are members of the University and College Union said they felt intimidated by college emails implying the demonstration could be illegal.

They also thought an ice cream van visit had been timed to "deflect attention" from the protest.

The college said they often organise incentives for staff and students and that it was their responsibility as an employer to highlight possible actions of joining a protest.

Many of the people involved in today’s protest also took full advantage of the Ice Cream and enjoyed them alongside our staff and students. Feedback was excellent and staff and students have requested that we book the van again. We can confirm our employment solicitors identified participating in an unofficial protest during staffing hours (11am) could result in a breach of contract. A communication was sent to staff to give clear advice on their own responsibility and to make an informed decision to participate."
