  1. Speedway legend Ivan Mauger dies aged 78published at 10:19 British Summer Time 16 April 2018

    Former Hull Vikings speedway rider, Ivan Mauger, has died.

    It's reported that he died at his home on Australia's Gold Coast aged 78 and had suffered from dementia.

    He who won six speedway world championships when dirt track motorbike racing had its heyday in the 1960s and 70s.

    Mauger joined the Hull Vikings in 1978, winning his last and record sixth world title in 1979.

    He left the city three years later.

    Getting your child a place at the school you want is not always easy or even possible.

    However, more primary school children in Hull and the East Riding will be attending their first choice schools in September.

    Parents of thousands of four year-olds will be allocated a school by their councils today.

    In the East Riding, 97.7% are being offered their preferred school, and in Hull, more than 94%.

    It is a different picture nationally though, as The Good Schools Guide, external says up to 60,000 children across the country could miss out.

    50 tonnes of Yorkshire dry stone and glacial boulders are also being taken down south for the show.

    Meet the litter pickers doing it for themselves in East Yorkshire, nine-year-old Isabelle and her little sister Lucy.

    Isabelle was inspired by the BBC Blue Planet series and has been clearing up the rubbish in her area.

    She's not the only one to take it upon themselves to make their community a better place to live.

    Numerous groups in Grimsby now regularly carry out litter picks, including the Community Shop on the Nunsthorpe estate.

    It is hoped more youngsters will be motivated to help.

    One of the country's most prolific comedy writers, Neil Shand, has died at the age of 84.

    Neil lived the latter part of his life in North Lincolnshire.

    During a career lasting 40 years, he worked on more a thousand shows with David Frost and wrote jokes for Spike Milligan, Kenny Everett and Bob Monkhouse among others.
