    A man has been repeatedly hit with a nailed plank of wood and kicked in what police are describing as a racially motivated attack in Hull.

    A group of around 20 men followed the man to a house on Laxthorpe, just off Hall Road, at around 19:30 BST yesterday evening, whilst shouting and threatening him.

    The 20-year-old victim was treated in hospital for head and facial injuries.

    Police are appealing for information.

    Hull born entrepreneur Alf Robinson has died at the age of 96.

    He founded Eng-Weld in 1960 selling tools from a corner shop on Hessle Road and from a second hand van.

    The company became the second largest welding distributor in the UK and commenced selling industrial gases in 1971.

    Energas was formed in 1985 and by 2012 had become the largest independent industrial gases company in the UK, with six production sites and 12 distribution centres throughout the North of England and the Midlands and employing hundreds of staff.

    Despite the companies being sold in 2012 to French-owned Air Liquide, their headquarters have remained in Alf's home city of Hull.

    His family said he was incredibly proud of his company and its employees and he never forgot his humble beginnings.

    An 11-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being hit by a car as he crossed the road in Brough.

    He sustained a head injury in the incident that happened on Welton Road at 17:00 yesterday.

    A man has been arrested after acting suspiciously in North East Lincolnshire.

    Humberside Police has received several reports of women being followed by a man in a white car, external in Cleethorpes and Grimsby

    A 32-year-old man remains in police custody.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council is encouraging residents to learn the signs in order to detect cancer early.

    Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK.

    Some of the signs and symptoms can include:

    • A pain in the stomach
    • Tiredness
    • Weight loss
    • Bleeding from the bottom and/or blood in the stools
    • A constant and unexplained change in bowel habit

    Most people with these signs and symptoms don't have bowel cancer but it's important to get checked by the GP if there are any concerns.

    The deputy director of Public Health hopes the campaign will help people lead healthier lifestyles.

    Some £34,000 is to be invested in Swanland's village park to help maintain and improve equipment.

    Maintenance work is already under way in the play area and seats and benches will be tidied up ready for the better weather.

    Some new equipment was installed in the park last November but Swanland Playing Field Association now hopes more can be replaced as some of it is more than 20 years old.

    However, the 66-year-old was shocked to discover he was pre diabetic following a routine blood test, external.

    Arthur is now part of the National Diabetes Prevention Programme, external which gives advice on eating healthily, being more active and losing weight.

    Arthur’s wife Carol, was encouraged to attend the course with Arthur, so they could both learn how to alter cooking and eating habits and make lifestyle changes.

    Arthur says he couldn’t have done it without her and is now urging others to take steps to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes, external.

    An NSPCC investigation has found that Facebook and apps owned by Facebook were used in the majority of on online grooming cases investigated by Humberside Police last year.

    The anti-grooming law of 'Sexual Communication with a Child' came into force in England and Wales one year ago.

    In the first nine months of it being in force there were 1,628 crimes recorded in England and Wales, and police revealed what platform was used in 956 cases.

    In the Humberside force area there were 50 crimes with the youngest victim recorded as a seven-year-old.

    Facebook was used in 18 cases while the Facebook owned app Whatsapp was used in one case.

    The second most-used app was Snapchat, used in seven cases.

    The NSPCC's Chief Executive is calling on the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, to bring in a mandatory safety code to regulate social networks.

    Traders on a city centre street in Hull want the council to do more to support independent shops.

    Business owners on Saville Street say they've been told they can't use on street advertising boards and think the area hasn't benefited from the kind of investment seen on other shopping streets.

    Some shops fear they will have to close due to the lack of footfall.

    Hull City Council says it wants to work with businesses, not against them, to ensure offers are advertised without compromising the accessibility of pavements.

    Dr Wolverson from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust has been put forward for the Alzheimer's Society Dementia Research Leader Award.

    The prizewinner will receive £1,000 to put towards their career development over the next year.

    The award will be presented on 22 May 2018 at the Alzheimer's Society's annual conference at the Kia Oval in London.
