Health specialists have sent out a warning after 14 people visiting a farm in West Sussex were infected with a serious stomach infection.

Public Health England (PHE) South East received reports of people becoming ill after visiting Gaston Farm, near Slindon from 17 March to 11 April.

The initial symptoms of the infection, caused by cryptosporidium, can take up to two weeks to emerge so people should remain vigilant if they have visited the farm during this period.

It is caused by a tiny organism, and is most likely to have resulted from contact with animals shedding the organism in their faeces.

The infection is easily passed on so people are advised to maintain good hand hygiene standards around the home.

Dr Kevin Carroll, a PHE consultant said: “Anyone suffering from diarrhoea symptoms is being advised not to attend school or childcare settings for 48 hours after recovery. And if you have been diagnosed with cryptosporidium you must not swim until at least two weeks after the symptoms have ended."

The farm is assisting PHE and remains closed to visitors.

  19. Care home assessments backlogpublished at 15:42 British Summer Time 13 April 2018

    Rebecca Curley
    Local Democracy Reporter

A backlog of thousands of care home assessments for those with dementia or life-long disabilities is likely to never be cleared, a report states.

More than 5,000 Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) assessments are outstanding across Surrey.

Families, care workers and doctors can apply for a DOLS when they believe a person lacks the mental capacity to consent to their admission to a care home or hospital.

This could be a family member with dementia with relatives trying to get the appropriate care or an adult with a life-long disability living in a specialised home.

Surrey County Council (SCC) carries out the assessments and an Audit review of DOLS in November 2017 reported 6,000 applications were awaiting assessment or authorisation.

SCC introduced a screening system in September last year to prioritise the applications but a report presented to councillors on the audit and governance committee at County Hall on Thursday stresses the high stream of referrals will remain.

It states: "With regard to the future, it is not possible to predict the exact number of DOLS request that we will receive over the coming years, but we do consider that the number of possible referrals from care homes and hospitals will remain fairly constant."
