  1. Consequences of Huddersfield A&E closure under scrutinypublished at 12:58 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    A planned big shake-up of health services for part of West Yorkshire is due to be discussed later by councillors.

    Kirklees and Calderdale's Health Committee are set to discuss the proposed consequences of shutting Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and transferring the town's A&E services to Halifax. 

    They can refer the issue to the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, but no decision's expected today.

  2. Jo Cox murder trial latestpublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    More details have been emerging in the trial of Thomas Mair, who is accused of murdering West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox on 16 June. He denies the murder.

    PC Nicholls (pictured left) told the court he was on unarmed patrol in a marked police car in Birstall with colleague PC Jonathan Wright when they were told to search for a man thought to be involved in a shooting.

    Just after 13:30 they spotted a man on Leeds Road, wearing a black baseball cap and carrying a black holdall in his hand and followed him to Risedale Avenue, a cul-de-sac residential street.

    The officers asked him to show his hands and he dropped the bag. He turned around to police, put his hands in his pockets and change fell out.

    He put his arms up and said "it's me", PC Nicholls told the court. The officers got out of the patrol car, ran towards him and rugby tackled him to the ground with a "heavy impact", the arresting officer said.

    An ambulance took him to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment before he was later taken to a police station.

    The trial continues.

    PC Craig Nicholls said he saw what looked like a pistol in a black holdall when he and PC Jonathan Wright detained the man in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

    The police officer who arrested the man accused of murdering Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox rugby tackled him to the ground, the Old Bailey has heard.

    The latest unemployment figures show a drop in the number of people out of work in our region.

    The number of people without a job in Yorkshire and the Humber between July and September stood at 151,000 - that's down by 7,000 on the previous quarter, a fall of 5.6%.

    The national figure's also fallen - by 37,000 to 1.6 million. That's the lowest level for 11 years.

    A virus that causes childhood coughs could help in the fight against liver cancer according to scientists in Leeds.

    They've discovered that an illness called Reovirus could be used to stimulate our immune system and kill off cancer cells - along with the underlying causes.

  8. Soldiers to be given training to deal with floodingpublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    Yorkshire soldiers are due to be given training later in how to set up temporary flood defences, almost a year after the devastating Boxing Day floods.

    The 2nd Battalion Yorkshire regiment will be given the training by the Environment Agency - which has prepared for winter by having in place around 24 miles of temporary barrier - that's five times as many as last year - as well as 250 high volume pumps.

    Key equipment for dealing with floods is also to be stored at seven strategic locations across the country, including at Riccall in North Yorkshire.

    Tributes have been paid to a 33-year-old cyclist who died after a crash on Kirkstall Road in Leeds yesterday.

    A white bike has appeared near the scene of the crash and people have been leaving flowers.

    The driver of a car which crashed into two shops remains in intensive care. 

    The accident closed Kirkstall Road for several hours causing massive delays to commuters.

    Two men have been arrested and bailed over the incident.

    The trial of the man accused of murdering West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox is expected to resume this morning.

    Mrs Cox was stabbed 15 times and shot three times outside her constituency surgery in Birstall, near Leeds, on 16 June.

    The trial had to be delayed yesterday because of a stoppage by prison officers which meant Thomas Mair couldn't be taken to the Old Bailey. 

    Mr Mair, 53, from Birstall, denies murder.  

  11. Halifax Piece Hall restoration completion delayed until next yearpublished at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2016

    A £19m restoration of Halifax's Piece Hall is now running at least a year behind schedule, the BBC has learned.

    The project involves repairing the Grade I listed building as well as creating cafes, shops, a restaurant and a heritage centre. 

    It was due to open earlier this year, but Calderdale Council leader Tim Swift says problems - including the discovery of an ancient graveyard - have delayed it until mid-2017.
