  1. HS2: West Yorkshire routes confirmedpublished at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

The government has announced the route for the second phase of the high-speed rail line HS2, from Crewe to Manchester and the West Midlands to Leeds:

    HS2 route

Critics of the £56bn project say it is a white elephant that will spoil some of Britain's most beautiful countryside. But the government says the new rail infrastructure will boost the economy by billions of pounds.

The first phase of the £56bn railway is due to open in December 2026 and will see trains travel at high speed between London and Birmingham before continuing on the existing West Coast Main Line.

The second Y-shaped phase, taking the high-speed line to Yorkshire, north-west England, and beyond, is due to be completed by about 2032-33.

  2. Councillors vote against pay risepublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

Believe it or not, it looks like councillors in Bradford look set to reject a pay rise.

Bradford council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said the ruling Labour group should reject a proposed one percent increase in allowances for councillors.

An independent panel had recommended that they should be increased for this year and next. Councillors will make a decision in December's full council meeting.

    Quote Message

It was unanimous amongst Labour councillors. We have all seen in great detail how the government cuts are going to slash the services of Bradford people over the next four years. In good faith we cannot therefore vote for an increase in our allowances. There was no hesitation in reaching this decision."

Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council leader
