  2. Baby abandoned on vicar's doorsteppublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2016

    A baby was found abandoned on a vicar's doorstep this morning.

    The baby boy was discovered outside the vicarage of St Peter's Church, in Hough Lane, Bramley. 

    The tot was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance but was pronounced dead a short time later. 

    Police want anyone with information to get in touch and are extremely concerned for the mother's welfare and the fact that she may need urgent medical attention given the potential circumstances surrounding the baby's birth. 

    Anyone with information or who may have seen anyone in the vicinity of the vicarage overnight is asked to contact police via 101.

    The Old Bailey heard as Jo lay mortally wounded in the street, the MP for Batley and Spen tried to protect her aides by urging them to leave her and save themselves.

    During the trial Mrs Cox's family were left in tears as her constituency caseworker Sandra Major described the MP's selfless response as she came under attack from Mair. 

    She told jurors: "He was making motions towards us with the knife and Jo was lying in the road and she shouted out 'get away, get away you two. Let him hurt me. Don't let him hurt you'."

    The shadow chancellor John McDonnell used his opening remarks on the Autumn Statement in the Commons to pay tribute to murdered MP Jo Cox.

    Speaking shortly after Thomas Mair was found guilty at the Old Bailey of murdering the Batley and Spen MP and given a whole-life sentence, Mr McDonnell said: "Jo Cox's murder robbed this House of a fierce advocate for social justice and a passionate campaigner. 

    "Her killing was an attack on democracy itself. Our thoughts are with her family this morning."

    Kim Leadbeater said Mrs Cox's killer Thomas Mair, 53, had committed an "act of extreme cowardice" and the 41-year-old MP's death has had a "ripple effect".

    Speaking outside the Old Bailey after Mair was given a whole-life sentence, Ms Leadbeater thanked those who witnessed the attack in Birstall on 16 June for their actions.

    Ms Leadbeater said: "Jo would have been extremely impressed, although not at all surprised, by the courage of her staff and constituents during this process and, indeed, on 16 June.

    "There may have been one act of extreme cowardice on that day but there were many acts of bravery."

    Reacting to the news that Thomas Mair, 53, has been sentenced to a whole-life sentence for the murder of Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox, the vicar of Birstall, the Reverend Paul Knight, has said he's "relieved" the trial at the Old Bailey is over.

    He said: "We want to concentrate on the good things that can come out of this. Jo was so positive and changed so many lives.

    "We want to make sure that's the thing that's remembered, not the guy that did it. We're getting back to a normality but we'll never forget Jo. That's what we promised.

    "Everybody always says that kind of thing doesn't happen round here but it did and we had to deal with it and there was an incredible outpouring of grief," he added.

    Kevin, from Birstall, tells me: "It's too good for him to be locked up forever, but that's just the justice system for you."

    Kevin goes on to add: "My sister went to school with her and knows her family. The knock-on effect is just massive, it's affected many lives.

    "Jo Cox was well-liked and respected. Death impacts people for years and years, but there's an even wider impact if you're a prominent person who helped many people".

    Speaking outside the Old Bailey after Thomas Mair was found guilty of the murder of his wife Jo Cox, Brendan Cox said: "A few weeks ago Jo was taken from us and our lives collapsed. To the world, Jo was a member of parliament, a campaigner, an activist and many other things.

    "But first and foremost she was a sister, a daughter, an auntie, a wife, and above all a mum to two young children who love her with all their being. 

    "All their lives they have been enveloped in her love, excited by her energy and inspired by her example. We try now not to focus on how unlucky we were to have her taken from us, but how lucky we were to have her in our lives for so long." 

    Mr Cox extended his thanks to well-wishers, adding: "This has been Britain at its best - compassionate, courageous and kind. It's given us great strength and solace."
