  2. Teacher cleared of sex assualt at West Yorkshire schoolpublished at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    A primary school teacher has been banned from teaching more than a year after he was cleared of sexually assaulting five boys.

    Brendan O'Brien, 47, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was acquitted of 18 charges at Leeds Crown Court in 2015.

    He has now been found guilty of unacceptable conduct while teaching at a school in Kirklees, West Yorkshire.

    Mr O'Brien was not present at the panel hearing of the National College for Teaching.

    In January 2015, he defended his allegations to the panel.

  3. Centenary service for Leeds WW1 blast factorypublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    A service is due to be held to commemorate 100 years since an explosion which killed 35 women at a Leeds munitions factory.

    The blast happened in a fusing room at the Barnbow Munitions factory in Crossgates on the night of 5 December 1916.

    It was the single largest loss of life in the history of Leeds.

    Historians, students and relatives of those who died are expected to attend the service at Barnbow Memorial in Manston Park.

    A shell exploded in Hut 42 just before 22:30 on 5 December 1916, killing 35 women and injuring many more.

  4. Report on segregation and integration 'confuses issues around culture and Islam'published at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    A new government report into integration gives a "confusing" message, according to a West Yorkshire-based advisor to the government on anti-Muslim hate crime.

    The report, by Dame Louise Casey, external, warns some areas are struggling to cope with the pace and scale of immigration.  

    It also says that women in some communities are denied "even their basic rights as British residents".

  10. National honour for Bradford's Ethical Tissue Bankpublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    The University of Bradford's tissue bank Ethical Tissue, has been named as biobank of the ear.

    Ethical Tissue, external is a research tissue bank which collects, stores and supplies a wide range of human tissue, cells and fluids to biomedical research groups in academia and industry.  

    Researchers nominated biobanks that have made their work possible and helped facilitate groundbreaking research.

    Bradford beat off competition from over 60 other biobanks to win the prestigious accolade.  

    Research Nurse Joanne Mullarkey, who received the award on behalf of Ethical Tissue, said the award recognises the "valuable contribution" made by donors.

    A mini adventure came to a safe end for Pip the Jack Russell after a busy day chasing a rabbit in Ilkley at the weekend.

    Pip got stuck in a rocky crag but luckily a West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crew was soon at hand to set him free.

    It was all thanks to a specialist animal rescue officer and technical rescue crew.

    Former Conservative Party chairman, Dewsbury's Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, has been tweeting her thoughts about a new government report on integration.

    Segregation and social exclusion has reached "worrying levels" and is fuelling inequality in some areas of Britain, the report finds.

  13. Watch: New railway station proposed for near Leeds Bradford airportpublished at 11:05

    Three new railway stations, including one near Leeds Bradford Airport, have been proposed as part of a £270m transport plan in Leeds.  

    The planned airport station would be situated about a mile from Leeds Bradford and would be on the existing Leeds-Harrogate line.

    It would also work well as a park and ride service for commuters, Leeds City Council officials say.

    Racial segregation is growing in the UK, according to a review commissioned by the government.

    The report, by Dame Louise Casey, external, warns some areas are struggling to cope with the pace and scale of immigration. And she says some communities have been left more divided.

  15. Appeal over man seen with 'distressed' child in Leedspublished at 10:01 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    Did you see this man and child in Leeds yesterday? The man was seen trying to persuade a girl to go with him while the child was "in a distressed state crying for mummy", according to police, external.

    They were initially seen on Waterloo Street at the Crown Point end of Hunslet Road close to a layby. 

    Police stress this "could be a completely innocent situation", with the child and man being related and no criminal offences being committed. 

    The girl is described as white, three to four-years-old, with blonde hair, wearing a pink jacket and grey tights. 

    The man is described as white, in his late twenties or early thirties, with dark spiky hair, a blue/black three quarter-length coat, and carrying a light green or blue shoulder bag.  

    Anyone with information is urged to contact the police.

    Leeds Rhinos have placed a £250,000 valuation on James Segeyaro and are considering legal proceedings over an alleged breach of contract.

    The club say they have "engaged legal advisors and are currently considering all legal options available in relation to this matter."

    Hooker Segeyaro, 26, recently returned to his native Australia.

    He subsequently told the Australian Sunday Telegraph that he was homesick and did not want to return to the UK., external

    Segeyaro joined the Rhinos from Penrith in June and is contracted to the Super League side until the end of the 2018 season.

    Flooding across parts of the UK last winter was the most extreme on record, experts have said.

    Gales and heavy rain swept across large parts of the UK, causing devastating flooding in West and North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire, as well as parts of southern Scotland.

    On the first anniversary of Storm Desmond, experts say November to January were the wettest three months since UK records began in 1910.

    Review author Terry Marsh said flooding was "extensive and repetitive".

    A study by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, in collaboration with the British Hydrological Society, found many rivers across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland saw record peak flows during the three-month period.

    The disappearance of a "vulnerable" 73-year-old Knottingley man who's not been seen since last Thursday, external has left police "very concerned" for his welfare.

    William Metcalfe, who goes by the name of Alan, was seen in the Hill Top area at about 17:00 on Thursday 1 December and he was last seen caught on CCTV in Wharfe Way at about 18:00.

    Mr Metcalfe is described as just over 5ft tall, of slim build, wearing a grey waterproof jacket with a hood, blue trousers, black trainers and wearing glasses. 

    Sgt Jeff Dulson says: "We are very concerned for Alan's welfare as he requires regular medication. We would like to hear from anyone who has seen him."

    A new "parkway" railway station for Leeds Bradford Airport is at the heart of a new £270m transport plan, external for Leeds which has just been revealed.

    The proposal could mean less traffic and more jobs for the region, according to Leeds City Council.

    Two additional stations are also part of the proposal - one at the White Rose Centre and another at Thorpe Park. 

    The proposals are due to be discussed council officials next week and if they're approved they'll go before transport ministers for further consideration.
