    Yorkshire's Gary Ballance says he'll "lead by example" as he takes on the club's captaincy following Andrew Gale's recent appointment as coach.

    Zimbabwe-born Ballance joined Yorkshire from Derbyshire in 2007 and the batsman helped them win back-to-back County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015.

    Ballance says: "I'm experienced now, I have played a bit of cricket over the years, so I have seen how different captains work. I think that I am a calm person and like to think that I have a decent cricket brain.

    "I'm not a massive speaker, but I will be looking to lead by example on the field and get the lads to follow me."

  2. Protest over closure of Knottingley Leisure Centrepublished at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    A protest against the planned closure of Knottingley Leisure Centre is due to take place tonight.

    The facility's scheduled to shut at the beginning of 2017 but its replacement, over in Pontefract, won't open for several years. 

    It's part of Wakefield Council's plans to save £185m in government cuts.

    West Yorkshire police admit they're concerned about the growing number of carjackings in the county - with 66 incidents recorded in the last few months.

    The latest came on Tuesday night in Bradford, when a 72-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds when two men tried to force him out of his Jaguar.  

    A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and remains in police custody.

    The father of an alleged "honour killing" victim has been granted bail in Pakistan "due to lack of evidence".

    Samia Shahid, 28, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, died in Pakistan in July.

    Chaudhry Muhammad Shahid is being held as a suspected accessory to the crime, with Ms Shahid's ex-husband accused of murder.

    Lahore High Court heard the prosecution provided insufficient incriminatory evidence for him to be kept in police custody.

  6. Hundreds turn out in Bradford for Aleppo vigilpublished at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time 15 December 2016

    More than 200 people gathered in the centre of Bradford last night in a vigil to show solidarity with people in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

    This morning it seems a fresh bid to evacuate civilians from the war-torn city could be successful

    Rebel sources say a new truce has taken effect and pro-government sources say preparations are under way.

    Yesterday a ceasefire in the country crumbled - with more bombings and artillery strikes.

    Last night's event in Bradford's City Park saw speakers from the Syrian community send messages of support.

    Yorkshire have appointed Gary Ballance as their new captain after Andrew Gale retired to become head coach.

    The 27-year-old England batsman will skipper the side in all three formats of the game.

    Ballance said: "It is an absolute honour to be named the club captain and to follow in the footsteps of some great captains over the years.

    "It was impossible to turn down. Being captain is something that I enjoy doing and hopefully I will do a good job."

    The Zimbabwe-born batsman joined Yorkshire from Derbyshire in 2007 and helped them win back-to-back County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015.

    "Do they know it's Christmas" was possibly one of the biggest charity singles of all time, and in 2016 Yorkshire has produced three charity singles, all with a message.

    In my latest blog, you can read all about the Chirstmas singles being released by former miners from a pit near Doncaster, South Yorkshire firefighters and friends of the Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox, who was victim of an appalling hate crime.

    Bradford Bulls have cancelled a training session today as the club's administrator told players that the club could be liquidated if ownership isn't settled by Friday.

  16. Travel update: Problems on the A629published at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2016

    We've got a couple of problems on the A629. First of all on Ovenden Road in both directions in Halifax at the Ovenden Way junction we've got some very slow traffic.

    And on Halifax Road in both directions in Huddersfield between Ainley Top Roundabout and the / Edgerton Grove Road junction.

    A teacher from Leeds is up for a global teaching prize which could see him winning $1m.

    Nathan Atkinson, who works at Richmond Hill Primary School, is down to the last 50 from an original 20,000 applicants. 

    Mr Atkinson has been praised for running a project which stops food from being wasted.

    The award is organised by the Varkey Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation established to improve the standards of education for underprivileged children throughout the world.

    A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery after a 72-year-old man was injured in an attempted car-jacking. 

    The injured man remains in hospital.
