    Yorkshire's community spirit has been praised by a government minister, as Hebden Bridge celebrates being named one of the best high streets in the country.

    Almost a year after it was devastated by flooding, the town's picked-up the best Small Market Town prize at the Great British High Street Awards. 

    After a record breaking number of votes, it was also named the "people's choice".

  2. Charity warns of FGM 'parties' taking place in West Yorkshirepublished at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2016

    Girls are being taken to female genital mutilation (FGM) "parties" in cities in West Yorkshire, a charity has warned.

    The Black Health Initiative in Leeds says midwives from Africa are being flown into the country to carry out the illegal practice.

    West Yorkshire Police said they were aware girls were being subjected to FGM locally.

    Latest NHS figures show more than 8,000 women across England have recently been identified as being victims of FGM.

  7. UK's biggest comic book festival will come to the centre of Leedspublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    After nine years of success at Leeds Dock, the UK's largest comic book festival has announced it will set up camp in the city centre.

    Thought Bubble attracts audiences in excess of 60,000 and is hoping the move will attract new fans of all things comic book.

    The festival will take over popular outdoor spaces in the city including Millennium Square and Victoria Gardens.

    The 11th edition of Thought Bubble Festival takes place from 18th to 24th September 2017 with a huge comic convention on 23rd and 24th September.

    A 38-year-old delivery driver who killed a couple in a head-on crash in Lincolnshire has been jailed for two years. 

    Michael Boothman, of Kirkstall, Leeds, took a bend too fast on the B1188 at Metheringham colliding with a car carrying Brian Dickinson, 82, and his wife Ruth Dickinson, 77, from Woodhall Spa. 

    Boothman, who suffered a broken hip in the crash, admitted two charges of causing death by careless driving at Lincoln Crown Court. 

  10. Leeds MP says we can build a light rail system in Leedspublished at 16:39 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    An event has been taking place in Leeds to try to convince officials that a light rail system should be built in Leeds. 

    The council has a £250m pound kitty after the trolley bus scheme was cancelled, but says it'll spend the money on improving existing infrastructure instead.

  11. More money for flood protection in Leedspublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Leeds city centre is getting extra money to ensure better flood protection. 

    An additional £3.8m pounds will be used to beef-up defences for homes and businesses and a new centre's also opened in Kirkstall offering people flood advice.

    The centre will act as a focal point for residents and businesses in Kirkstall, giving them easy access to information on the flood scheme, flood resilience advice and provide an opportunity for them to share their local knowledge and aspirations for the area to help shape the future scheme.

    This additional support from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the LEP to enhance flood protection and resilience measures in the city centre is also very welcome as we continue to work towards securing the comprehensive measures we need to put in place across Leeds as soon as possible.

    Money from the proceeds of crime is being made available to groups who want to help communities in West Yorkshire.

    The Safer Communities Fund , externalhas been launched to help voluntary, community groups, charities and partners make their communities safer and feel safer.   

    It's all part of the new Police and Crime Plan set out by West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner.

  13. Huddersfield Giants: Costello death 'accidental'published at 15:23 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    A 17-year-old rugby league player's death was "accidental", an inquest has ruled.

    Ronan Costello, of Huddersfield Giants Under-19s team, was playing Salford Red Devils in June when suffered a severe traumatic brain injury.

    Bradford Coroner's Court heard Ronan slipped during a tackle and hit his head on the ground.

    Police want to question this man about an attempted burglary in Bradford. Do you recognise him?

    He's white, of slim build and average height and believed to be in his twenties or thirties. 

    He was wearing a fluorescent jacket at the time of the incident which took place on Hampden Street on the 27th November in the early evening.

    A 54-year-old man has already been arrested in connection with the burglary. Anyone with information can contact the police on 101.

  16. Hebden Bridge wins Best High Street awardpublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Hebden Bridge finally has something to cheer about in 2016.

    Just under a year since its centre was devastated by flooding, it's now been named as the Best High Street in the country in the "small market town" category of The Great British High Street Awards.

    Hebden Bridge also won the People's Choice Award with 40,000 votes - not bad for a town with a population of just over 4,000:

  17. Dewsbury MP backs ban on extremist National Action grouppublished at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff (pictured) has supported a planned government ban on a British neo-Nazi movement - the first far-right group to be banned under terrorism laws in the UK.

    National Action has been described by Home Secretary Amber Rudd as a "racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic organisation".

    Following the murder of Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox, a branch of the group tweeted praise for her killer, Thomas Mair.  

    An order laid in Parliament to proscribe the group - making it a criminal offence to join or support it - is due to come into effect on Friday.  

    Paula Sherriff has tweeted that the ban is "good news" and says far-right group Britain First should be added to the banned list.

    Former Bradford City footballer Dean Windass has been made bankrupt over a £150,000 tax debt.

    A judge made the bankruptcy order against the 47-year-old striker at a hearing in London following an application from HM Revenue and Customs.

    He was not at the hearing and was not represented by a lawyer.

    Windass made more than 600 appearances and scored more than 200 goals for more than half a dozen clubs in an 18-year career.
