    Knife crime won't be stopped until the reasons why people feel the need to arm themselves are properly understood, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    The force is taking part in a week-long series of operations to tackle the problem, and a a no-questions-asked weapons amnesty is currently under way.

    The number of offences involving knives and bladed weapons in South Yorkshire is on the up and police are now working with Sheffield Hallam University to analyse why.

    In case you missed the news which broke yesterday evening, Noel Gallagher, Craig David and the Stereophonics have been announced as headline acts for this year's Tramlines in Sheffield, external.

    Former Oasis singer-songwriter Gallagher will appear with his band the High Flying Birds.

    Other big names for the event in Hillsborough Park, which runs between 20 and 22 July, include De La Soul, Reverend and the Makers and The Sherlocks.

    The event is now in its 10th year and the move away from more central areas of Sheffield is intended to offer greater variety and capacity for festival-goers, organisers say.

    A woman who believes she was attacked by the Yorkshire Ripper says she's "come to terms" with the fact he'll never face more charges.

    Peter Sutcliffe is serving 20 life sentences for murdering 13 women and attempting to kill another seven.

    Now, West Yorkshire Police have said they have no plans to charge him with any additional crimes after looking into whether he was responsible for a number of other attacks.

    There've been reports about his potential involvement in 17 unsolved crimes, including the attack on Mo Lea in Leeds in October 1980.

    She says: "For the last two years, police have been working hard to find enough evidence, but I'm not surprised in the slightest."

  5. Investigation continues into fatal house firepublished at 06:30

    Investigations are continuing this morning into the cause of a house fire in Leeds which led to the death of a five-year-old boy who'd been seriously injured in the blaze.

    Alex Clarke was taken for emergency surgery in Manchester following the fire at his home in Second Avenue, Rothwell, on Sunday evening.

    West Yorkshire Police said his mother, brother and sister were also in the house at the time but were unharmed.

    An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire, which started upstairs at about 20:30.

    A five-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a fire at a house in Leeds has died in hospital.

    Alex Clarke had been receiving emergency treatment in hospital in Manchester following the fire at his home in Second Avenue, Rothwell, at about 20:30 last night.

    His mum, brother and sister who were in the property at the time were unharmed.

    A West Yorkshire Police investigation is ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

    Police in Huddersfield say they have now charged nine people over violent disorder at a Huddersfield Shopping Centre last Saturday.

    They now say they also want to speak to these two people about what happened:

    It centered on the Kingsgate Shopping Centre at about 15:30 on 3 February after people called police when they saw a group of men with weapons.

    No-one was injured during the incident and the group dispersed after a few minutes.

    A further 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and has been bailed.

    A woman from Leeds is trying to find a way of thanking an unknown stranger who got her lost driving licence back to her.

    Lauren Clarke lost the document and went through her entire house to try to find it.

    But a few days later it arrived in the post with a note from someone known only as Emma which read "I found this outside Leeds bus station, so I just wanted to get it back to you as soon as I could!"

    She wrote on Facebook "Major long shot....But if Emma is on here... I can't thank you enough!!!!!"

    Police in a town near Pontefract say they're trying to find two teenagers who broke into a supermarket and started a fire.

    It happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at Tesco on Market Street in Hemsworth when a boy and girl thought to be aged between 16 and 18 broke into the front of the shop.

    They then started a fire in the entrance way and walked off, damaging the front of the store.

    Officers say the girl was wearing glasses and had hair which was tied in a ponytail and the boy had short hair.

    A man whose mongrel bull terrier attacked and killed his neighbour has been found guilty of being the owner of a dog which caused death while it was dangerously out of control.

    Aaron Joseph was found guilty of the offence at Leeds Crown Court today by a jury which deliberated for just 39 minutes.

    The jury heard how David Ellam, 52, died after he was attacked as he walked his Yorkshire terrier, Rollo, by Joseph's dog, Alex, outside his flat in Huddersfield in August 2016.

    The court has heard how Alex was only handed back to Joseph a week before the attack after it had been determined not to be a dangerous breed following a complaint from Mr Ellam.

    Judge Sally Cahill QC said she will sentence Joseph on Tuesday and told him: "You are facing a very long custodial term."
