  1. Police search car after school arrests in Sheffieldpublished at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2018

    Officers are at the scene of Fir Vale School in Sheffield after two men were arrested this morning.

    There were reports of a car being driven at speed in the school grounds, with damage being done to the front of the school building.

    No-one was injured.

    The dismantling of the Endeavour's masts and rigging continues in Stockton continues today.

    Strong winds stopped the cranes from working yesterday but the masts are expected to be down by tomorrow.

    The replica of Captain Cook's ship is being moved to Whitby in time for the 250th anniversary of Cook's voyage to Australia in July.

    It was built as a floating museum for £2.5m in 1993, but was sold at auction last August for £110,000 to a partnership led by businessman Andy Fiddler.

    The National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling on dog owners to keep their animals under control.

    It follows figures which show sheep and other livestock worrying is costing Yorkshire farmers nearly three times as much as it did two years ago.

    The NFU say livestock worrying cost farmers in the region £125,000 last year. That's up from £45,000 in 2015.

    Police say they're looking for 15 to 20 teenagers in Bradford after they caused £11,000 of damage in a KFC.

    Staff at the restaurant on Odsal Road say they had asked the group to leave after they were using bad language.

    But the group started to throw things around and smashed large windows - they then ran off.

    West Yorkshire Police say staff were not injured during the fracas which happened on 1 February and they are appealing for witnesses.

    I've been getting an account of an incident at Fir Vale School in Sheffield this morning which has seen two men being arrested.

    Police say the were called out after reports of a black BMW was being driven at speed around the school car park and that it had caused damage to the entrance.

    No one was injured; police say the school will be closed for the rest of today.

    A 20ft by 10ft wooden cross has been suspended from York Minster this morning.

    It's been placed on the central tower to mark the Christian season of Lent, which begins tomorrow on Ash Wednesday.

    The cross has been made from rough lengths of scaffolding wood by the Minster’s works department and will stay in place until 20 May.

    An arrest has been made after a man went on the run armed with an axe in Leeds at the weekend.

    A 36-year-old man handed himself in at Elland Road police station this morning after an appeal by West Yorkshire Police yesterday.

    It comes after a van hit a cyclist in Sheepscar at about 17:30 on Saturday and then hit several more vehicles before being abandoned.

    Another van was then stolen after the occupants were threatened by a man with an axe before a bicycle was later stolen in Headingley.

    Leeds Beckett University students said they were on "lockdown" at the campus in Headingley (pictured) during the incident and were told not to leave their accommodation.

    The school itself says all pupils and staff are safe and no-one has been hurt.

    Three years after a terrorist attack in Tunisia killed 38 people, including a couple from West Yorkshire, British tourists can start going to the destination again from today.

    Tour operator Thomas Cook is taking British tourists back to Tunisia this week for the first time since an ISIS gunman massacred 38 people - 30 of them British - on a beach in Sousse in 2015.

    Sharon and Christopher Bell, from Leeds, were among those shot dead.

    Until last summer, the Foreign Office advised against travel there due to the high risk of terrorism.

    But now it's lifted travel restrictions, saying Tunisia has made great progress on security.

  13. Digital technology keeps cops on streets for longerpublished at 09:36 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2018

    North Yorkshire Police officers have been given special smartphone software to help in the fight against crime.

    The kit, known as a "mobile office", means police can send evidence straight back to the station from the scene of a crime, instead of being taken off the streets to do paperwork.

    It's already being used by officers out patrolling in North Yorkshire.

    More police and community support officers will be issued with it later this year, the force says.

    Rock acts Kings of Leon and Fall Out Boy have been announced as the headliners at this year's Reading and Leeds festival.

    R&B artist Kendrick Lamar and popstar Dua Lipa will also perform, alongside BBC Music Sound of 2018 winner Sigrid.

    Work starts today on a £250,000 renovation of Sheffield's Norfolk Heritage Park as part of a city council scheme which will see £1.5m of improvements to parks across the city.

    The idea is to make parks more appealing through better play and recreation facilities and routes for joggers and walkers.

    A planned flagship housing development in North Yorkshire still needs millions of pounds of investment before it can go ahead, it's being claimed.

    The government recently announced it's giving £9m to help the Olympia Park project in Selby get off the ground.

    Architects said the project - which was first started in 2003 - would feature 1,000 homes and retail and sporting facilities.
