  2. Jet 2 marks 15th anniversary in Leeds with special flightpublished at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2018

    West Yorkshire-based airline Jet 2 is celebrating 15 years of flights from Leeds Bradford Airport today.

    The airline began operating with two flights to six destinations and is now the third biggest in the UK.

    A special celebratory flight will take off from the airport later today.

    A stretch of road near York was the most congested in the whole of Yorkshire last year, according to experts.

    The image above shows the Hopgrove Roundabout on the A64 near York at a quiet time.

    But travel monitoring service Inrix says there were about 1,000 traffic jams there in 2017.

    Highways England says it's planning upgrades, external on that part of the road.

  4. Man with axe pursued by police in Leedspublished at 09:06 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2018

    A man carrying an axe was chased by police officers through part of Leeds at the weekend after he fled a car crash.

    The man's van was involved in a collision with three other vehicles at the junction of Scott Hall Road and Sheepscar Street North (pictured) at about 17:30 on Saturday.

    Police say he then used an axe to steal a white van to drive away from the scene and was later seen close to the Arndale Centre in Headingley.

    He subsequently used the axe to remove a secured bicycle after abandoning the van close by, according to police.

    He is then thought to have left the bicycle close to St Chad’s Rise and gone into woods.

    A "significant police operation" took place to try and find the man, who's described as white, in his 30s or 40s, with a black beard and a flat cap.

    Officers say they know who the man is and enquiries are continuing today to locate him:

  5. Watch: Sheffield woman's 'friendship letter' goes viralpublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2018

    The story of how two strangers struck up a friendship on a train in South Yorkshire has gone viral.

    Their conversation was overheard by Hannah Thornton, from Sheffield, who was so taken by the way the men got along that she handed them a handwritten note as she got off the train.

    The note Hannah wrote told them it was a "heartening" thing to witness:

    Hannah works for a charity called Age Better in Sheffield and is keen to tackle loneliness, which she says is more common nowadays through an ageing population.

    One of the men later wrote back to her saying: "I wish every trip was like that.".

    At least 1,000 people have signed a petition against plans to remove graveside decorations from a Scarborough cemetery.

    Scarborough Borough Council says it wants to keep Woodlands Cemetery, external and crematorium tidy.

    There are concerns about the quantity of large trees being placed in the grounds as well as small fences and lights, the authority says.

    But campaigners say the move is causing unnecessary distress and upset at an emotional time.

    The decision to end the East Coast Mainline rail franchise early is to come under scrutiny from MPs.

    The Department for Transport has said Stagecoach and Virgin will withdraw from running the service, which runs through Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, within months after running into difficulties.

    Now the House of Commons transport committee has announced that it will hold an inquiry into the matter.

    Rail Minister Jo Johnson acknowledged the companies overbid for the right to run the service.

    He told the BBC's Today programme: "They overbid, it's very simple and the department is looking very carefully into the bidding process to ensure there aren't any incentives for bidders to overbid."

    Simon Grayson will take charge of Bradford City training today for the first time, following his appointment as the club's new manager at the weekend.

    Grayson becomes the first man to manage Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Bradford, having gained promotion out of League One with both United and Town.

    Bradford halted their run of six consecutive defeats with a 2-2 draw at home to Bury on Saturday.

    The Bantams currently sit sixth in League One, 12 points off the automatic promotion places, and are chasing their first league win since New Year's Day.

    Grayson had been without a club since October, having left Sunderland after less than five months in charge at the Stadium of Light.

    Police have issued an urgent appeal, external to help find two missing teenagers from North Yorkshire.

    Lewis Bonson, 14, and 16-year-old Neil Gordon, both from Scarborough, were last seen on Saturday night by their families.

    Officers believe the teenagers are together and may have attempted to travel out of North Yorkshire to the Birmingham or the North West.

    A boy's being treated in hospital after being injured in a house fire in Leeds last night.

    Fire crews were called to the property, in Rothwell, at about 08:30 on Sunday evening.

    The boy was rescued from an upstairs bedroom and was taken to hospital suffering from burns and the effects of breathing in smoke.

    Two members of the public who tried to get into the house but were fought back by the heat and smoke were also checked over by paramedics at the scene.

    Smoke alarms were fitted and working in the house, according to the fire service, and investigations will continue today to work out what caused the blaze.

  11. Junction revealed as 'most dangerous' in Yorkshire improvespublished at 07:12

    Changes to what was once the most dangerous road junction in Yorkshire have drastically cut the number of accidents there.

    The Packham Road and Wentworth Road junction in Rotherham saw the highest number of crashes over five years.

    However, a reduced speed limit and improved road markings meant that just six of the 28 crashes happened after the changes in July 2014.

    The Duke Street/York Street junction in Leeds was the second most dangerous.

    Of the 28 incidents recorded between 2012 and the end of 2016 at the Rotherham junction, four were fatal or involved serious injury and 24 left people with non-serious injuries.

    A man whose car crashed into a house during a police chase has died.

    The unnamed 22-year-old was driving a Toyota Auris when it hit the home in Smith Fold, Queensbury, Bradford, before striking a garden wall at about 11:55 on Friday.

    West Yorkshire Police said the car had earlier failed to stop for officers and was being pursued.

    Officers said the man died of his injuries in hospital on Saturday evening.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the crash. Witnesses have been urged to come forward.

    A leading police officer who wrote a report into the failings of the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper has died.

    Sir Lawrence Byford, who was 92, died on Saturday at his home in Pannal, near Harrogate.

    His report on the Yorkshire Ripper case, external led to fundamental changes to the way investigations into serial killers would be carried out across the world.
