    Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman died from her injuries following a collision in Sheffield last month.

    Margaret Cooper - who was 74 and from Sheffield - was hit by a red Kia Picanto when she was crossing Blackstock Road at around 18:20 on 26 January.

    Mrs Cooper sustained serious head injuries and died in hospital last Wednesday.

    Police in West Yorkshire say they have no plans to charge Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe with any further offences.

    Sutcliffe is serving 20 life terms for murdering 13 women and attempting to kill seven more, but last year officers confirmed they are reviewing historical unsolved cases linked to the Yorkshire Ripper.

    Det Supt Jim Dunkerley from West Yorkshire Police, said: "At this moment in time, West Yorkshire Police have no intention to seek a CPS decision to charge Peter Sutcliffe with any further matters."

    The 1982 Byford Report said he could have been responsible for a further 13 offences.

    The report said there was an "unexplained lull" in Sutcliffe's criminal activities between 1969, when he first came to the attention of police, and the first officially-recognised Ripper assault in 1975.

    Five men have been charged after a police officer was assaulted in Bradford last Friday.

    It happened between 17:00 and 18:00 in Highfield Gardens, Heaton.

    A police officer was called to a disturbance and when he got there he was hit with what is being described as an object.

    He was treated in hospital for cuts to his face.

    Five men, aged between 19 and 48, have been charged with offences relating to the attack and have been bailed to appear at court next month.

    A sixth male has been released under investigation.

    A young woman has been assaulted in a park in North Yorkshire.

    It happened at about 03:50 on Sunday in Bullamoor Park, Northallerton, when a 19-year-old woman was grabbed by a man and pushed to the ground.

    Police say they are are particularly interested in speaking to a group of three males and two females who were seen with the victim on Bullamoor Road, at the junction of Vicars Croft, before heading towards the town centre.

    Sheffield City Council has described behaviour by tree protesters who stopped the pruning of an rare butterfly inhabiting tree as "unreasonable and unlawful."

    Work on the Elm tree in Nether Edge was planned for this morning, after the council said it was causing severe damage to the highway.

    A number of people gathered around the tree and stopped the pruning.

    The council says the action "stopped essential work" to make the tree safe to local residents and passers-by.

    The council, which is planting new trees after removing existing ones, insists the trees earmarked for felling are either "dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory".

    However, many of the trees classed by the council as "damaging" or "discriminatory" are healthy specimens which campaigners say should be saved.

    Instead they say amendments should be made to surrounding pavements and roads.

    The potential of fracking in the UK could have been exaggerated according to a government report.

    Fracking is a technique designed to recover gas and oil from shale rock.

    The industry said a fracking boom would see 4,000 wells drilled by 2032.

    But a newly released document estimates just 155 wells will be constructed by 2025.

    It comes as Third Energy says it won't be in a position to frack at its site in North Yorkshire's Ryedale before Easter.

    In January, Business Secretary Greg Clark said he would not give the go-ahead until financial assessments of the company had been completed.

    Protesters, who have been at the site since September, welcomed the decision.

    Four men have stolen jewellery and money during a burglary in Yarm.

    Four men, all wearing black clothing and balaclavas, entered the property on Kingsdale Close at about 17:30 on thursday where a woman was inside with a baby and a young boy.

    The men stole money and a substantial amount of jewellery from upstairs as well as forcibly removing jewellery from the woman, before all four made off on foot on to Davenport road.

    No one was injured during the incident.

    This van driver got more than he bargained for when he stopped at a police station in Bradford to ask for directions:

    Police officers seized the van and reported the driver to court after it turned out he gave a false address to an insurance company and a false date of birth.

    In a tweet, West Yorkshire Police said, external: "Rule 1. When insuring a vehicle to a false address and giving a false date of birth, don't stop outside the Police station to ask for directions! Nelson Street, Bradford."

    A research team at the University of Sheffield, external has been awarded £100,000 to investigate the spread of breast cancer.

    The grant has come from the charity Second Hope, external.

    It's to help try to find why breast cancer, external spreads to the skeleton in 80% of patients who develop secondary or advanced breast cancer.

    At least 1,000 people have signed a petition against the plans, but Scarborough Borough Council says it wants to keep Woodlands Cemetery, external and crematorium tidy, citing concerns about fences and lights being placed at graves and the quantity of trees being planted.

    Campaigners say the move is causing unnecessary distress and upset at an emotional time.
