  3. Kirby Misperton fracking protesters claim 'little victory'published at 06:30

    Protesters are claiming a victory in their fight against planned fracking in North Yorkshire.

    All this week, lorries have been taking equipment off Third Energy's site at Kirby Misperton in Ryedale.

    The company says the removed equipment will be used elsewhere while waiting for the government to make a final decision on whether it can go ahead and start fracking.

    But retired vicar Jackie Cray, who opposes fracking and who lives in the village, says local residents and campaigners are celebrating "a little victory".

    Jackie says they're "very grateful for the lull in activity", but believes protesters "need to be watchful and wait and see what's happening".

    It was revealed yesterday police have so far spent almost £670,000 staffing protests at the site.

    Robbers used a gun to get into a flat in Bradford last night - police say they're trying to find their getaway car.

    It happened just before midnight in Wedgemoor Close in Wyke when a member of the public phoned police to report men trying to get into a flat.

    When police arrived they saw that a door had been damaged by a gunshot and the flat had been searched.

    Officers say the attack was targeted and have deployed "reassurance patrols" in the area.

    Police say they've arrested more than 400 people in an operation targeting offenders who use the roads of West Yorkshire.

    Operation Spawood began in November, and in the first three months has seen over 400 arrests, with 33% of those being charged for offences.

    Many others remain on police bail or under investigation, say officers.

    A fire at a block of flats in central Leeds was confined to just the balcony, according to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

    The blaze broke out at 15:45 this afternoon on the 11th floor of the Skyline apartments near the bus station.

    Four fire engines were called to the scene.

    But firefighters say the fire didn't spread and there were no injuries - Fire investigation teams are now on site.

    A man has been jailed for life for trying to kill his three children and step-daughter by hitting them with a hammer then crashing a car into a wall.

    Owen Scott, 29, of Fawley, Hampshire, admitted four counts of attempted murder and dangerous driving at Sheffield Crown Court, after the crash near Penistone, South Yorkshire.

    Two girls, aged seven and eight, and two boys, aged 21 months and nine months, were seriously injured.

    Scott will serve at least 14 years.

    She's from Rotherham but also visits Sheffield.

  12. Former BBC Look North presenter: 'horrendous' five yearspublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2018

    Former BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd says a ruling that she may have to pay a tax bill of £420,000 has ended "five horrendous years of innuendo and gossip".

    Ms Ackroyd and HMRC were in dispute over the nature of her BBC contract and whether she had paid too little tax - She was one of a number of people employed by the BBC via personal service companies.

    Ruling against her, a tax tribunal said HMRC had "never suggested" she was a tax cheat or had acted dishonestly.

    Ms Ackroyd said "As you can imagine I have suffered five horrendous years of innuendo and gossip suggesting I am a tax cheat. This judgement proves once and for all I am not."

    HMRC says Ms Ackroyd is liable for unpaid tax between 2008 and 2013 totalling £419,151. Ms Ackroyd claims the unpaid figure is approximately £207,000.

    The BBC has not commented on the ruling, external yet.

  13. Teenager dies from injuries after A46 crashpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2018

    A 19-year-old woman, who was involved in a crash on the A46 north east of Lincoln earlier in the month, has died.

    Gemma Marshall was a passenger in the car which crashed at Welton on Saturday 3 February.

    The teenager from Rotherham was taken to the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, along with the driver, with serious injuries.

    She died in hospital on Tuesday.

    A man from York has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a white BMW hit a police car in Acomb.

    A 20-year-old man from York was arrested and is still in police custody.

    Thirty three people have been arrested in Bradford in a police operation designed to drive down burglaries.

    During the month-long sting officers targeted people suspected of burgling houses, garages and garden sheds.

    Called Operation Shrilldale, 14 people have been charged as a result and West Yorkshire Police say officers are continuing enquiries.

    Ch Insp Michael Rutter, who led the operation, said: “Operations like Shrilldale give us an opportunity to look at burglary from a district perspective and target the areas which are most affected."

    A man's told police he was chased by a biker after telling riders off for riding through woodland in Sheffield.

    Police say the man challenged the two bikers in Hazelshaw Woods off Penistone Road earlier this month.

    He says he was threatened and chased by a biker carrying a piece of wood, and the pair then smashed the windows of his Land Rover.

    Officers want to hear from anyone who might help them trace the bikers from these CCTV images.
