    Two drivers are in hospital this afternoon after an earlier crash in North Yorkshire.

    The crash happened on the A661 between Spofforth and Wetherby this morning.

    The driver of a black Citroen (above) suffered chest and abdominal injuries while the driver of a white Skoda (below) was left with muscular and soft tissue injuries.

    A police officer who attended the scene tweeted, external: "Thank goodness there wasn’t a passenger in either car".

    It is being reported that people living in the block were not evacuated as the fire took hold because the fire alarm system couldn't be activated by the person who spotted the fire.

    Former BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd is facing a tax bill of up to £420,000 after losing a legal battle with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

    Ms Ackroyd and HMRC were in dispute over the nature of her BBC contract and whether she had paid too little tax.

    She was one of a number of people employed by the BBC via personal service companies.

    Ruling against her, a tax tribunal said HMRC had "never suggested" she was a tax cheat or had acted dishonestly.

    Neither the BBC nor Ms Ackroyd have commented on the ruling, external yet.

    A High Court judge has ordered UKIP to pay some of the legal costs for the Yorkshire MEP Jane Collins over a libel case against her.

    Jane Collins was successfully sued for libel by Rotherham's three Labour MPs.

    It's not clear how much of the £670,000 bill the party will have to pay.

    Mr Justice Warby said UKIP, for party political reasons, deliberately held up the settlement of the High Court defamation case until after the 2015 general election.

    A strike has been announced next month on Northern trains - who run most of Yorkshire's local train services.

    Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will walk out on 3 March in a long-running dispute over the role of guards on their trains.

    Mick Cash from the RMT said: "No-one should be in any doubt - these disputes are about putting the safety of the travelling public before the profits of the private train companies."

    Arriva Rail North, who operate Northern trains have been contacted for comment.

    Police want to speak to this man after a woman was allegedly racially abused, external on a train between Doncaster and Newark Northgate.

    The woman told officers she was verbally assaulted in a quiet carriage after asking a man to stop being so loud.

    Four baby pygmy goats are proving to be a big draw at the Tropical Butterfly House in North Anston.

    Three of the resident goats have given birth to four kids, one by emergency cesarean section.

    He's been called Beau and has had to be bottle fed and cared for round the clock until he was strong enough to join the rest of the baby goats in the Farm Barn, external.

    A 14-year-old girl from Leeds who is now missing from home is thought to be with a 25-year-old man.

    Police have issued an urgent appeal for help in finding Branadine Gyimaah.

    She was last seen at her home in Beeston yesterday morning and was reported missing last night.

    She is thought to be with Hamzar Ali, 25, who has links to Lancaster in Lancashire, and to Manchester.

    The pair are believed to have travelled from Leeds to Lancaster by train yesterday.

    A 96-year-old woman says she was intimidated in her own home by men attempting to sell her fish.

    She says that after she answered the door of her home in Eggborough, near Selby in North Yorkshire, one of the men walked into her home uninvited, and began unpacking the fish into her freezer, before asking for £100.

    Police say the victim handed over £60 to the man, because "she felt intimidated and wanted him to leave."

    Officers are asking for anyone who recognises the men in these pictures to contact them.

    A man has been arrested after a knife attack at a West Yorkshire abattoir this morning.

    A man in his 20s was taken to hospital with shoulder injuries after the incident at Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers in Ossett just before 11:40.

    He is still in hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    A man in his 30s was arrested over the assault and is now in police custody.

    Police say the abattoir will remain closed while they conduct enquiries.

    A man from Bradford has been arrested after a cash machine was blown up in Darlington.

    It is thought the ATM, on Cockerton Green, was filled with gas and ignited early on Wednesday.

    The explosion caused significant damage to the free-standing machine, and offenders made off with a five-figure sum of cash.

    A 34-year-old man from the Bradford area has been arrested in Leeds and Durham Police said it was continuing to pursue a number of lines of enquiry.

    Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds has been awarded a top national prize, but it's not for how well the grounds are kept or how well the 800-year-old structure has been preserved.

    No, members of the team there have been recognised for giving one of "Yorkshire’s warmest welcomes".

    They've been given Visit England's Welcome Accolade, which highlights the region’s best quality visitor experiences.

    Elaine Francis-Truett, from the abbey, said: "It's such a stunning and historic attraction which captures more than 800 years of our local history, so we’re also very proud to be doing it justice."
