If approved the new tower block will be built on the current site of Hume House (pictured), a five-storey 1960s block near Leeds Arena, and would be the tallest building in the city.

The new building, which would have space for over 700 students, would be over 130m tall and, because of its position, would be seen from most parts of the city.

The vision, according to a report to be seen by councillors, is to provide "a landmark building for Leeds" and to "provide a significant addition to the skyline of the city".

  4. Sheffield publisher only publishes female authors in 2018published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2018

    Ian Youngs
Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

When author Kamila Shamsie challenged the book industry to publish only women in 2018 to help address a gender imbalance in literature, just one publisher took up the challenge - the Sheffield-based company And Other Stories.

    Stefan Tobler and Saba Ahmed

It was almost three years ago that Shamsie suggested "a concerted campaign to redress the inequality" in publishing.

Arguing that there was a gender bias in book awards, reviews, top publishing jobs and prestige afforded to authors, she suggested that 2018, the centenary of women over 30 in Britain getting the vote, would make a good Year of Publishing Women.

Women would be prominent in review pages and blogs, shop windows, festival line-ups and prize shortlists, she predicted.

The response? A lively debate about opportunity in literature ensued, but only one person responded to the call to arms. Read all about it here.

Both North Yorkshire Police and Thames Valley Police are only noting 80% of crimes reported, according to the report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, external (HMICFRS).

Almost one in five crimes in North Yorkshire are "not properly being recorded" - something the HMICFRS says is "inexcusable".

North Yorkshire's Deputy Chief Constable Lisa Winward says the force "needs to do much better" when recording crimes and adds it is working on the recommendations for improvement.
