    It's a make or break day for some community arts groups in Leeds today.

    Plans to increase the amount they pay to hire a venue in the city are being discussed.

    A total of 14 community groups say they may be forced to close down if the council goes ahead with plans to raise prices at the Carriageworks theatre.

    The council says budget pressures mean it can no longer offer voluntary groups reduced charges.

    A former pupil at a South Cumbria boarding school has told jurors he was throttled and thrown around "like a rag doll" during an alleged attack by a teacher.

    Four men are on trial at Carlisle Crown Court having denied assaults which are said to have occurred at Underley Hall School, near Kirkby Lonsdale, during the 1970s and 1980s.

    Underley Hall's 77-year-old former owner, Derrick Cooper, of Hillberry Green, Douglas, Isle of Man, denies six charges of actual bodily harm and further denies two child cruelty allegations.

    Two former teachers and an ex-maintenance man each deny one actual bodily harm assault allegation.

    They are:

    • Fred Trevor Taylor, 75, of Lower Park Royd Drive, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire
    • James Robert Farish, 58, of Oakwood, Kendal
    • David Hadwin, 71, of Raygarth Gardens, Kirkby Lonsdale.

    Allegations about Mr Farish were made today when another former student gave evidence.

    He spoke of Underley Hall being "brutal", and conceded he "hated" both the school and Mr Farish, his then teacher.

    Having received warnings about bad behaviour, the witness told jurors how Farish "dragged me out of the classroom by my hair".

    "He was trying to calm me down and I wasn't calming down because I didn't like him," he said. "He grabbed me by the neck. He was squeezing that tight I almost passed out because I couldn't breathe. I was begging him to let go."

    The trial continues.

    A West Yorkshire lake has been closed to the public because E. coli bacteria has been found in the water.

    Pugneys lake near Wakefield was shut on 1 February after the potentially fatal bacteria was found.

    Other bacteria, Enterococcus hirae and Enterococcus faecalis - other potentially lethal bugs - were also found.

    Wakefield Council says levels of the bacteria are beginning to fall and no-one has been taken ill.

    The lake will remain closed until the levels are safe.

    Police in Filey have released CCTV images of two men they want to speak to in connection with a break-in at a scrap metal dealers on the Yorkshire coast.

    Officers say a "quantity" of scrap was stolen from premises on Hunmanby Industrial Estate between 19:00 and midnight on Saturday.

    A new war memorial has been built in a part of Leeds to honour people from the area who died as they served their country.

    The new memorial stone includes the names of people from Garforth who were killed during the First World War, Second World War and the Korean War.

    It's the first of its kind in the area, with no others being outdoors,.

    The only other one with a roll of honour is inside St Mary’s Church.

    Lord Mayor of Leeds Jane Dowson says: "This was an extremely proud and moving occasion, especially for those involved who have worked so hard to bring the memorial project to fruition."

    Police searching for a missing 75-year-old man from Calderdale who has dementia have found a body.

    Anthony Conroy, from Cragg Vale, was last seen at about 15:00 on Tuesday near the Robin Hood pub on Cragg Road in Mytholmroyd.

    West Yorkshire Police say Mr Conroy's family has been informed.

    A prime piece of land in Sheffield is available to Channel 4 as part of efforts to get the broadcaster to move its HQ to the city.

    The proposed site is next to the railway station in the city centre.

    Last year, the government announced a public consultation over moving the company out of London as part of attempts to "rebalance the economy" away from the capital.

    Sheffield is one of a number of cities bidding to become the channel's new home, including Leeds.

    The Hope Valley rail line which connects Sheffield with Manchester is to be upgraded, the government has confirmed, external.

    The line is currently affected by slow freight trains between Bamford and Dore.

    The planned improvements will allow passenger trains to overtake, with three fast trains per hour instead of the two which currently run on the line, according to the government.

    Would-be robbers armed with a brick tried to steal cash from a newsagents in Batley last night.

    It happened at about 19:00 at Local Express on Common Road in Staincliffe.

    Two men went into the shop, told the shopkeeper to hand over money and slammed a brick on the counter when their demand was refused.

    They left empty-handed and on foot - Police say they are looking through CCTV footage to try to identify them.

    Jack Coulson has appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court via video link from Leeds Magistrates' Court.

    It is alleged that between January 3 and January 20 this year, he possessed a document which contained information of a kind likely to be useful to a person looking to commit an act of terrorism.

    Jack Coulson has been remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on March 1.
