Publicity stunt backfires on campaignerspublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2018
A publicity stunt aimed at showing how long it would take to drive to another hospital in the event of Huddersfield's A&E department being closed down has backfired.
The idea was to stage an unofficial race between runners and a car to show how long it takes to get from Kirklees to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax where bosses want to move the A&E.
However, the car arrived first with the runner about 20 minutes behind it.
The run was between Holmfirth - which is served by the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary - and the Calderdale Hospital in Halifax.
NHS managers want all emergency and high-risk care to go to the Calderdale Royal Hospital, but campaigners say they're worried about journey times between parts of Kirklees and Halifax, saying lives could be put at risk.
