    Police in Leeds want to speak to these two women after a woman had her purse stolen on a train.

    The City of York Council still has no permanent leader today after councillors failed to back Conservative Group leader Ian Gillies.

    The situation arose after David Carr (pictured below) quit the Conservative party last night. He was sacked last week following a vote of no confidence.

    He'll now serve as an Independent along with Suzie Mercer who also quit the Conservative Group and Party.

    There'll be another meeting in a week to try to appoint a new leader.

    Research carried out in Yorkshire suggests there are more than two hundred million mistakes with people's medication in the NHS every year.

    The study from the universities of Sheffield, external, York and Manchester found there are more than seven hundred avoidable deaths every year as a result.

    The health secretary Jeremy Hunt is due to set out measures to reduce the number of medication errors today.

    A man's been seriously injured in a suspected stabbing in Scarborough.

    The attack happened at about 22:25 last night near a taxi office on Ramshill Road.

    The victim, who's in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

    Two men in their 20s and one in his 40s were arrested and remain in police custody.

    A North Yorkshire Police spokesman says officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and say there is no threat to the public.

    A podcast called Reasons to be Cheerful, external by Doncaster MP and former Labour Party leader Ed Miliband has been nominated for an award.

    Mr Miliband teams up with experienced radio host Geoff Lloyd for the podcast and the pair take on social issues with invited guests.

    Their work has been nominated for the first ever podcast category at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, external.

    It's fair to say the news has been somewhat grim recently, but how about this to brighten your Friday in Yorkshire?

    Some kind-hearted soul has left sweets and uplifting messages in parts of Leeds, including at this bus stop:

    The sweets with "4U" written on them have also been spotted along with signs saying "Hello amazing (yes you!!)" and "You are someone's hero":

    They have been mainly spotted in the Richmond Hill area of the city, all with messages featuring #feelgoodfriday written on them.

    Nobody's sure who's behind them, but it's certainly having the desired effect:

    An elderly care organisation in the area tweeted, external: "Someone has been busy leaving treats & kind messages for everyone around Richmond Hill this morning. Whoever you are THANK YOU! Certainly made our morning."

    The mystery person or people has taped sweets and flowers to lamp posts, bus stops and gates.

    Some have been a little sceptical on social media, though, with one poster saying: "The signs and words totally fine. But not sure about the sweets, especially near the school."

    But others are less dubious, with another poster commenting: "I saw one of the signs this morning and made me smile! We need more of this."

    Two more local authorities in North Yorkshire have agreed how much more residents should pay for their council tax in the coming year.

    Ryedale District Council says anyone living in an average home in the district will pay nine pence more per week, that's a 2.6% increase as it now has to deliver £4.9m of savings per year.

    Selby District Council says its council tax is going up by 10 pence per average household, which is £5 for the year.

    Selby District Council Leader Mark Crane says the authority's budget is a balance between continuing to make savings and doing things more efficiently.

    Both authorities says everyone's total bill will include funding for Adult Social Care Services at North Yorkshire County Council.

    A man has been left with leg injuries after a suspected axe attack in a part of Bradford yesterday.

    Police say they were called to a house on Highfield Road in Idle at 13:30.

    They think the victim was attacked with a weapon believed to be an axe and was left with leg injuries.

    Officers are looking for witnesses to come forward.

    Leeds playwright Alan Bennett has created a new play about an NHS hospital threatened with closure.

    The world premiere of Allejujah! will open in London, at the Bridge Theatre, in July and it's billed as being "as sharp as The History Boys and as funny as The Lady In The Van".

    The setting is the The Beth, "an old fashioned cradle-to-grave hospital serving a town on the edge of the Pennines", which is threatened with closure.

    The play is about a documentary crew who follow its fight for survival and the daily struggle to find beds on the Dusty Springfield Geriatric Ward.

  13. Laser art to light up the Barnsley sky tonightpublished at 11:25 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2018

    An eye-catching spectacle is promised tonight in Barnsley and beyond.

    It's called 'Neon River' and it'll shoot into the sky from Barnsley town centre and across the Dearne Valley.

    It's the work of artist Patrick Murphy who'll beam lasers from the top of the Digital Media Centre in the heart of Barnsley that'll be visible from ten miles away, so people in Doncaster and Rotherham might well see it, too.

    The idea is to use light to create the effect of 'a river in the sky'.

    Neon River, external was commissioned by the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP), as part of its Art of the Dearne project.

    The DVLP says it works to protect, preserve and enhance the landscape of the Dearne Valley with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    The light show can also be seen over the weekend.

    The family of a man who died in a car crash earlier this week say they are "devastated" to have lost him. Police say they're now looking for a woman who stopped at the scene.

    It happened on Monday at 07:30 on Wrangbrook Lane in Upton near Pontefract just off the A1, a red VW Golf and a Vauxhall van hit each other head-on.

    The man who died - 56-year-old Robert Tucker from Barnsley - died at the scene. The driver of the VW, a 28-year-old woman, is still in hospital in serious condition.

    Police say they now want a woman who stopped at the scene of the crash to come forward. Officers say she was in a red car- possibly a hatchback - but left before they arrived.

    A woman from Leeds is desperately trying to find her late grandmother's armchair after it was mistakenly given away when she died.

    Hayley Jeffcoate's grandma lived in Leeds and died last month. Most of her possessions were given away to charity.

    However Hayley had her heart set on bringing her grandma's old armchair back to life and reupholstering it - but it had ended up in the removal lorry by mistake.

    It was sold at the Wakefield British Heart Foundation branch the week after she died. Now Hayley is hoping to buy it back from the person who bought it.

    Harrogate Police want to speak to this man in connection with two incidents in the town on Friday 9 February.

    In the first one, police say A 34-year-old woman from the Leeds area was inappropriately touched by a man in the town's Revolution de Cuba bar at around midnight.

    The same man then assaulted a 33-year-old man from the Leeds area, pushing him to the ground and leaving him with a cut nose, bruising around his eye and cuts to his arm.

    Police are asking anyone who can identify the man to get in touch with them.

    Pub-goers had to leave a York pub last night following a fire.

    Crews from York, Acomb and Huntington used breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras to tackle the fire at Brigantes on Micklegate just after 20:00.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says the fire was in a downstairs utility room and caused fire and smoke damage to the property.

    It's believed it started in a tumble dryer.

    The Mayoress of the Borough of Scarborough is urging women over 70 to get regularly checked for breast cancer.

    Cherry Smith arranged to have a mammogram.

    Her family has a history of breast cancer.

    She was diagnosed with stage three of the disease.

    There were no signs that she had it.

    Now she's doing a sponsored head shave for Breast Cancer Care after being diagnosed with the disease.

    The head shave is taking place on Monday, 26 February at 1500 at Scarborough Town Hall.
