    At one stage, there were 16 miles of queues westbound, but that's now going down.

    But there are still about 12 miles of standing traffic, with reports that lorries are struggling to climb hills in the slippery conditions.

    Some motorists say they've been stuck for around five-and-a-half hours.

    Some appointments and non urgent operations are being postponed at hospitals in Bradford because of the snow.

    Patients are being asked to stay at home if they can - and their appointments and surgery will be rearranged in the next few days.

    A spokesperson for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “Due to the exceptional bad weather we are advising patients not to come to Bradford Royal Infirmary, St Luke’s Hospital or Westwood Park Diagnostic and Treatment Centre for non-urgent outpatient appointments or surgery."

    “However, if patients have managed to reach hospital for an outpatient appointment, we will try and see them as planned."

    The Met Office has extended its severe weather warning, external for Yorkshire, with frequent and heavy snow showers now expected to continue until tomorrow lunchtime.

    The Met Office warns that roads could remain blocked by snow and travel disruption will continue.

    Rail services have been severely disrupted, with passengers being asked not to travel to Scotland on the East Coast Main Line.

    Virgin East Coast is running a limited service from York and has suspended services for the time being from Leeds to London.

    It's due to damage to overhead cables between Wakefield and Doncaster and the company has advised customers not to travel today or tomorrow.

    Meanwhile, flights out of and into Leeds Bradford Airport, external are also affected by the weather conditions and are experiencing delays.

    About 1,000 schools across Yorkshire have closed as snow and ice continues to affect the county.

  12. No injuries in M62 fire, but drivers stranded for hourspublished at 12:37 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    Highways England says no one was injured when one of its vehicles caught fire on the M62 this morning:

    The blaze has led to people being stranded on the M62 for about five hours in both directions.

    The Land Rover caught fire as it was trying to assist other stranded vehicles on the motorway.

    Highways England is now trying to clear the motorway at J21 eastbound, which is currently closed, as are two lanes westbound.

    Cars have had to be towed away after being abandoned in the snow overnight in Sheffield city centre.

    The owner of this car, Abdul, tells us he had to leave it on Park Square Roundabout after breaking down yesterday.

    People are understandably getting angry about being stuck on the M62 today.

    Some drivers have so far been stuck on the road for about five hours.

    There have even been reports of snowploughs getting stuck.

    This is the vehicle which has been on fire causing massive delays on the M62.

    The blaze has caused about 16 miles of queues and almost five hours of delays for some motorists.

    West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue says the road is now open again after being closed eastbound and down to one lane westbound.

    The A19 south of York has been one of many a tricky places to be in Yorkshire this morning.

    A multi-vehicle accident involving lorries happened just before 11:00.

    Then, to add to the problems, this lorry came off the road.

    But thanks to John, from nearby Fairburn farm, and his tractor the wagon's now been freed .

    Police say the road is suffering from heavy snowdrift and are asking drivers to take care.

    The twin sister of a York man who died while skiing in the French Alps has paid tribute to her brother, saying he had the "kindest heart".

    Jordan Waugh, 23, fell from a cliff at Alpe d'Huez on Saturday.

    In a Facebook post, his sister Kennedy Waugh said the family was "struggling to come to terms with the news".

    French authorities said Mr Waugh was one of three men who went off-piste and fell in steep and icy conditions at the ski resort. The other men were rescued.
