  2. Travel update: 16-mile queues on M62published at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    It's not looking good on the M62 at all this morning:

    There are now roughly 16 miles of queues westbound from J25 to J21.

    Two lanes are closed on the westbound side and the eastbound is closed completely between J21 to J22 due to a vehicle fire.

    Roads in Sheffield city centre are relatively clear of snow, according to traffic cameras in the city.

    Members of the team say they grit their main priority routes first and that side streets should be treated using grit bins.

  4. Travel update: Lorry blocks A19published at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    The A19 just south of York is not a good place to be this morning.

    Earlier we told you about a multi-vehicle accident involving lorries.

    Now it appears another lorry has come off the road too:

    North Yorkshire Police say traffic is passing slowly southbound.

    It's happened just after the Happy Haddock towards Selby - and recovery is on the way.

  5. Hull KR v Castleford update: Match postponedpublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    After a ground inspection this morning, Hull KR have confirmed that tonight's match at Craven Park is off.

    They were due to take on Castleford Tigers.

    A new date for the match hasn't been decided yet.

    The rail operator which runs train services on the East Coast Main Line is advising customers to not travel today or tomorrow because of the weather.

    Virgin East Coast has suspended its service between Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster, and London because of damage to overhead lines in the snow:

    The body of an elderly woman has been found in a street in Leeds.

    Police were called to Well Street, in Farsley, at about 06:10 this morning.

    The 75-year-old's body was partially under a parked car.

    Det Insp James Entwistle says: "At this stage there is nothing to suggest her death is suspicious.

    “We have established the woman’s identity and are in contact with her family."

    A multi-vehicle accident involving lorries has blocked the route into York from the south.

    The A19 is blocked between Carr Lane and Wheldrake Lane near Crockey Hill.

    Drivers are being advised to find an alternative route.

    A bridge collapse in North Yorkshire yesterday has been blamed on reinforced steel beams giving way.

    The steel beams formed part of a hard standing private car park in Skipton, across Eller Beck.

    The beams gave way, causing the car park to collapse into the beck, according to Craven District Council.

    No-one was injured in the collapse, but parked cars plunged into the beck and others teetered on the edge.

    A Sheffield business is offering free warm clothes for homeless people in the city today.

    Staff at Syd and Mallory's and Knuf Vintage, on Devonshire Street, say they've also had offers from people wanting to donate clothes to the shop.

  14. Driver freed from vehicle after two car smash near Yorkpublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    A driver had to be freed from a car after two vehicles crashed on the A19, external south of York this morning.

    The collision happened at about 05.40 between Crockey Hill and Deighton and involved a Ford Focus and a Ford Fiesta.

    North Yorkshire Police said the road was was blocked whilst all three emergency services dealt with the incident.

    The drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospital by ambulance to be checked over.

    We're being told that a gritter has got stuck in deep snow in Darton, near Barnsley.

    South Yorkshire Police say it's on Woolley Edge Lane, and the road isn't passable with two feet of snow.

    They're asking people to avoid the area.

    A group of Sheffield schoolchildren are stranded at a local farm, because their minibus can't make it through the snow.

    The year two class, from Reignhead Primary in Beighton, were on the residential trip at Whirlow Hall Farm. But now they have had to stay an extra night.
