    A report out today on a taxi driver who killed a Leeds woman and buried her body at Brimham Rocks - near Harrogate in North Yorkshire - is expected to show he had mental problems from childhood.

    In 2014, Martin Bell (pictured) was given a 12-year sentence for a hammer attack on Gemma Simpson who was 23.

    Her body remained hidden for 14 years.

    Bell pleaded guilty on the grounds of diminished responsibility to the manslaughter of Gemma, from Leeds, in May 2000. He had turned himself in to police in July.

    During interviews he took officers to Brimham Rocks and showed them the burial site, telling detectives he had visited the site four or fives times since.

    Paul Greaney QC, defending Bell, told the court the defendant heard voices telling him to do things and that he had "developed complex delusional beliefs" which saw him moving around the country because he believed a group of men was trying to kill him.

    Bell had been sectioned in a mental hospital for about nine months in August 1999 and was released some six weeks before he killed Miss Simpson.

    York has been named "the best place to live in Britain" according to a newspaper guide.

    The walled city topped The Sunday Times list due to its "perfect mix of heritage and hi-tech".

    The newspaper described it as a "mini-metropolis with cool cafes, destination restaurants, innovative companies - plus the fastest internet in Britain".

    Places were ranked on factors including jobs, schools, local shops and broadband speed.

    Bermondsey was named the best place to live in London, with Frome, Somerset, coming top in the South West.

    Police in Sheffield are appealing for witnesses to a stabbing which has left a woman fighting for her life.

    Officers say it happened in the early hours of Sunday morning on Gibbons Drive, off Norton Avenue and left the woman with "life-threatening injuries to her upper body."

    A 25-year-old man and 15-year-old have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

    Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.

    Two men have smashed through a door with a hammer to rescue a woman from a house fire in North Yorkshire.

    Fire crews say the upstairs of the house in Hambleton Road in Norton, near Malton, suffered extensive damage in the blaze which broke out at 18:30 last night.

    Crews will be back at the scene today to work out how it started.

    Claudia Lawrence, 35, disappeared after leaving her house on Heworth Road in the city on 19 March in 2009.

    She was on her way to work.

    There were a number of arrests following a review of the case in 2013, but no one was charged.

    Scientists in Sheffield say they have made a significant breakthrough in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS).

    Results from an international trial have shown that a stem cell transplant can halt the disease and improve symptoms.

    Doctors involved in the study say it's a "game changer" for many patients with the disabling condition, which attacks the brain and spinal cord.

    It involves wiping-out a patient's immune system using cancer drugs and then rebooting it with a stem cell transplant.

    A total of 100,000 people in the UK have MS, which attacks nerves in the brain and spinal cord.

    Just over 100 patients took part in the trial, in hospitals in Chicago, Sheffield, Uppsala in Sweden and Sao Paolo in Brazil.

    More than 100 long-distance runners have been treated for hypothermia after being rescued from blizzard conditions on the North York Moors.

    The Hardmoors 55 ultramarathon, in which 300 people ran over the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills on Saturday, was halted due to extreme conditions.

    Cleveland Mountain Rescue helped rescue a third of the competitors at Kildale from 20:00.

    Several all-terrain vehicles were needed to carry out the rescue.

    A spokesperson for the rescue team described the weather as "appalling wintry conditions".

    "At times the visibility was zero in the swirling snow and the covered road hard to make out," they said.

    "The ice under the snow on the road made road-holding entertaining to say the least."

    According to its website, the Hardmoors 55 takes runners from Helmsley to Guisborough and contains over 2,000m (6,562 ft) of ascent.

    A Met Office weather warning, external for ice remains in place for Yorkshire this morning until 10:00.

    Ice is likely to form on untreated roads and pavements and cycle paths.

    The Met Office says this increases the risk of accidents, as well as injuries due to falls.
