    A "cake and a cuppa" event aimed at tackling loneliness is to be held in Thirsk.

    Thirsk and Sowerby Town Hall will be the venue for BBC Radio York's latest "cake and a cuppa" event on 18 April.

    Members of the public are invited to come along for a free afternoon, full of cakes and cups of tea.

    The last event was in Tadcaster and was hosted by afternoon presenter Adam Tomlinson (pictured).

    Anyone using the region's motorways knows that the roadside if often strewn with litter - either dumped from car windows or blown into roadside trees and bushes.

    Highways England says they worked with Tidy Britain to clear 1,800 bags of rubbish from motorways in Yorkshire in a recent clean-up.

    The rubbish wasn't just litter; they found old bikes, fridges, settees and a number of wallets.

    The chairman of York City Supporters Trust has insisted it was right not to sell its 25% share to Jason McGill.

    Jason McGill announced last week he was putting his 75% share up for sale after the trust voted against transferring its 25% share to his company.

    Yesterday he announced he was stepping down as chairman and will have no further involvement with the club.

    York Supporters Trust chairman, John Lacy, said it was "a surprising turn of events in some ways".

    A man and a woman died at Doncaster railway station last night after being hit by a train, British Transport Police (BTP) has confirmed.

    Emergency crews were called to the station at about 20:20 on Tuesday and the two people involved were later declared dead at the scene.

    BTP adds that officers are still working to identify those killed and to inform their next-of-kin.

    An investigation into how the man and woman came to be on the tracks is ongoing, but the circumstances are not thought to be suspicious, according to police.

    At a time when buying tickets online for events is the default method for many people, a change is being brought in for next year's World Snooker Championship, external in Sheffield.

    The organisers say the first day of ticket sales will be for people who are prepared to go to the Crucible box office to buy them.

    Tickets for the event sell out very quickly online, hence the move to help devoted fans who are prepared to buy them in the traditional way. Tickets for the 2019 event go on sale on 6 May.

    A West Yorkshire woman's preparing to take on the challenge of a lifetime by trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest.

    Becca Cripps, 27, from Ilkley, is heading for the Himalayas in aid of Childline.

    She said: "The fact that I'm doing it for a charity I'm really passionate about will help me push on."

    Becca, who volunteers for Childline in Leeds, is currently in training before setting off on her challenge in May.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of wielding swords in a street in a West Yorkshire town.

    West Yorkshire Road Policing Unit tweeted that officers had been called to Hanover Street in Keighley on Tuesday afternoon.

    A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a weapon in a public place and remains in custody, according to police.

    Thirsk's "yarnbombers" have been at it again - this time celebrating 100 years of the RAF by decorating the North Yorkshire town with knitted planes.

    Members of the group have covered bollards in the town with knitted aircraft as well as hanging spirals and pom poms from the trees.

    The yarnbombers have previously knitted special designs to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire and to commemorate Remembrance Day.

    An 18-year-old man needed hospital treatment after being stabbed near Sheffield United's ground.

    The victim was stabbed on Clough Road last Wednesday.

    He's now been released from hospital and there've so far been no arrests in the case.

    Anyone with information about the attack is being asked to contact police.

    The North Yorkshire grandfather of footballer Lewis Cook is £17,000 better off this morning after his grandson played for England against Italy last night.

    Back in 2014, Trevor Burlingham went into a bookies in Tadcaster and bet £500 on Lewis, who was then 18 and breaking into the first team at Leeds.

    He was given odds of 33/1 on Lewis going on to become an England international before he was 26.

    Cook made his international debut last night, coming on as a substitute during the 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium.

  13. Test run for York's pop-up Shakespearean theatrepublished at 08:14

    A trial version of a replica 16th Century Shakespearean theatre which will come to York this summer has been constructed at a "secret location" in North Yorkshire.

    The designs are being tested out before the real theatre is constructed in York's Castle car park opposite the landmark 13th Century Clifford's Tower.

    Lunchbox Theatrical Productions is due to put on a series of the Bard's plays at what's believed to be Europe's first ever pop-up Shakespearean theatre later this year.

    Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet and Richard III are set to be staged there during a 10-week summer season.

  14. Calls for statue of Leeds WWII RAF hero to be movedpublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 28 March 2018

    Campaigners in Leeds are calling for a statue of one of the city's World War Two heroes to be moved somewhere where it's easier to see.

    RAF pilot Arthur Louis Aaron landed a plane despite suffering multiple serious injuries, saving the lives of three of the aircraft's crew.

    Members of the Bring Him Home campaign say the memorial to Aaron is barely noticeable where it currently stands, on a city centre traffic island in the shadow of the Victoria centre.

    Leeds City Council is being asked to move the statue to Oakwood, where campaigners say the statue of the Victoria Cross recipient would be easier to access.

    Former York City FC chairman Jason McGill, who stood down from the post on Tuesday, had been "fantastic for the club", manager Martin Gray has said.

    After his team's 3-2 win over Southport at Bootham Crescent last night, Gray was asked if he was sad to see McGill go.

    He said: "I think everybody in the north of England knows Jason McGill as York City.

    "I don't know of any chairman that's been involved in putting their wealth and their livelihood and giving everything to a club and being at a club as long as he has. It's unheard of."

    Gray contrasted the situation with his former club, Darlington, saying he had five different chairmen in five years at the club.

    He added: "It's about stability, I came here because of that and I owe everything to the chairman Jason McGill. He's been fantastic."

    Megabus ads promising fares from £1 - including on routes from Leeds - have been banned after the company admitted as few as one seat per coach was available at that price.

    The web ad for a new Aberystwyth to Birmingham Megabus route featured the text "From £1".

    The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said consumers would expect to be able to find the "from" price if they booked in advance.

    A Megabus spokeswoman said future marketing would not focus on prices.

    The ASA also took the Stagecoach-owned operator to task for another web ad that listed routes from Leeds to new Yorkshire destinations, claiming: "As always our fares are from £1*."

    A West Yorkshire grime artist has brought out a track to support the police in tackling knife crime.

    Leeds rapper Graft says there are too many stabbings and is working with West Yorkshire Police to encourage young people to stop carrying weapons.

    He's told the BBC there are "too many" stabbings and it's a "worrying time".

    Ch Insp Anwar Mohammed said the police were there to support initiatives for "driving positivity, awareness and education".

    Two people have died after being hit by a train at Doncaster railway station last night.

    Police and paramedics were called to the station about about 20:20 and the pair were declared dead at the scene.

    An investigation has now been launched into how they ended up on the tracks.

    Officers are now working to establish the identity of the two people and a file will be prepared for the coroner, police say.
