    New research says regularly drinking more than the recommended amount of alcohol could take years off your life.

    The study, published in the medical journal The Lancet, warns that people should have no more than five pints of beer or five small glasses of wine each week.

    An analysis of about 600,000 people found those drinking more than the recommended amount had an increased risk of early death.

  2. Two charged after man found with serious facial injuriespublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 13 April 2018

    Two men have been charged over a serious assault in Bradford this week which left a man in a critical condition in hospital.

    The two men, aged 32 and 51, have both been charged with wounding with intent.

    They are due to appear before magistrates later today.

    A man in his 30s was found with facial injuries in Woodcross Court in the early hours of Tuesday morning, he is still in hospital in a critical condition.

    Two other men were arrested in connection with the assault, a 23-year-old is still in custody and a 44-year-old man has been released without charge.

    A woman in care with Alzheimer's Disease, who had fractured her femur, had to wait four hours before an ambulance was called, a new report has revealed.

    The revelation is just one of 4,883 allegations of abuse towards vulnerable adults which has been reported to Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Health and Social Care in 2016/2017.

    The figures, published in a new report, also show the most common types of abuse reported were physical, psychological and financial.

    An officer from The Safeguarding Adults Partnership for Sheffield said: "This is a challenging task, but we are clear that by working in partnership with the local community, carers and those who use our service we can make a difference to their well-being and safety."

    An arrest has been made after a car and van which were stolen in London were used in a burglary in Leeds last night.

    The car was stopped by officers in Leeds and the van was followed to Pool-in-Wharfedale.

    It was stopped by officers from West Yorkshire Police's road policing unit and North Yorkshire Police.

    Officers say they've arrested one person and their enquiries ongoing.

    Burglars have broken into a York jewellers by knocking a hole in the wall from the shop next door.

    Police say two men got into the Fraser Hart shop on Coney Street by climbing through the roof of the Cancer Research shop next door.

    Once inside, they knocked a hole through the wall and entered the jewellers.

    The break-in took place at about 20:25 on Sunday evening.

    Officers want anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them.

    Police say they've released CCTV images "in the hope the public might recognise the distinctive clothing the men are wearing".

  8. Bradford persistent fly-tippers caught on CCTVpublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 13 April 2018

    A van which Bradford Council say has been involved in multiple fly-tips across the city has been seized by the police and an Environmental Enforcement Team.

    The vehicle and its occupants were caught on the council’s CCTV fly-tipping tyres and building waste.

    The council says members of the public have witnessed and reported the vehicle on at least six other separate occasions.

    The fly-tippers have been identified and the council says it's looking to prosecute them.

    The maximum penalty is an unlimited fine, or a custodial sentence of up to five years.

    Changes in environmental legislation now allow councils to seize vehicles being used in fly-tipping or transporting waste without a waste carrier’s licence.

    He was reported as missing from the Parson Cross area of Sheffield on Thursday 12 April.

    Police say he has short brown hair, is about 6ft 3ins tall and is of a slim build.

    He was last seen wearing a turquoise coloured jacket and a brown baseball cap.

    A fountain in York which has been a city centre focal point and meeting place for more than 20 years is going to be demolished.

    Councillors who made the decision at a meeting last night say they'll consider what will replace the Parliament Street fountain - but in the interim a floral display will be there.

    The structure, which hasn't worked for several years, has been linked to problems with anti-social behaviour and has been used to store drugs paraphernalia.

    Options being considered to replace the fountain include an artwork to commemorate Victorian York philanthropist Joseph Rowntree and a bandstand.

    House prices in Yorkshire and the Humber have seen one of the biggest rises in value in Britain since the start of 2018, new figures show.

    Statistics compiled by property search firm Zoopla show house prices in the region grew by an average of £2,750 between 1 January and the end of March this year - an increase of 1.85%.

    The average house price in the Yorkshire and the Humber region now stands at £177,103, according to the latest figures.

    Batley, in West Yorkshire, is among the top 10 towns in the country which have seen the biggest increase in house price value in the first quarter of this year.

    The average house price in the town now stands at £143,947 - a rise of 2.77%, or £3,878, since 1 January.

    However, Immingham, in North East Lincolnshire, has emerged as the town with the weakest growth in property values in the whole of Britain, according to the new figures.

    The average value of a house there is £119,708 - a fall of 1.72%, or £2,097, since the start of the year.

    Ripon, in North Yorkshire, has also seen one of the biggest falls in house prices so far in 2018 - with the average house price standing at £282,885 - a fall of 1.08% since the turn of the year.

    A murder investigation's under way in Brighouse following the discovery of a man's body at a property in the town.

    The body was found after officers were called to a house on Whinney Hill Park just after 14:00 yesterday.

    The 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

    A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody.

    Work to keep trespassers off the former Hatfield Colliery site is costing Doncaster Council thousands of pounds every week, it's emerged.

    The pit closed in 2015, but documents published by council bosses show the authority is paying £145,000 every year to keep people off the site.

    About £25,000 is going on repairs and maintenance costs, while £120,000 is being spent on a private security firm.

    Money's having to come out of council reserves to cover the costs, the authority says.

    Almost 3,000 people have now signed an online petition calling for the reinstatement of a Scarborough lifeboat coxswain.

    Tom Clark was "permanently stood down" by the RNLI after more than 30 years' service because of what the organisation said was an "unauthorised lifeboat training exercise".

    Mr Clark says he had been given permission and clearance to go out.

    The singer is suing the BBC for misuse of private information and breaking data protection rules when covering a South Yorkshire Police raid on his apartment in Berkshire in 2014.

    A barrister leading Sir Cliff's legal team told Mr Justice Mann that BBC coverage of the search at the singer's apartment in Sunningdale was a "very serious invasion" of privacy.

    The BBC says its coverage of the police raid was accurate and in good faith.

    An organisation in Bradford is putting film fans through their paces by organising pedal-powered cinema screenings.

    The wheel-powered reel is the idea of Grassroots Events, which is hooking up bicycles to generators to power screenings of Bollywood films.

    Camille Thomas, who came up with the idea of people cycling on stationary bikes to power the cinema set-up, says communities across West Yorkshire have been given the chance to choose their own films by taking part in social media polls.
