    Police forces are struggling to cope with a big rise in the number of "pop-up brothels", where sex workers and criminal gangs use hotels, or short-term holiday lets as a work base.

    Over the last nine months, South Yorkshire Police has received 48 intelligence reports relating to different locations, a BBC Yorkshire investigation has found.

    The force also says it's rescued five victims of people trafficking from such premises during the same period.

    An All Party Parliamentary group is conducting an inquiry into the rise of temporary brothels.

    The Home Office says it needs to gather more "robust evidence" on the scale and nature of sex work.

  5. Abusive laser jammer begins jail sentencepublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 24 April 2018

    A man from North Yorkshire who fitted his car with a laser jammer and made rude gestures as he drove past speed cameras is beginning an eight-month jail sentence this morning.

    Timothy Hill, 67, of Old Mill Lane, Grassington, has also been banned from driving for a year for perverting the course of justice.

    He was photographed on three occasions in December gesturing with his middle figure while driving past police camera vans on the A19.

    North Yorkshire Police also detected the laser jammer on his white Range Rover.

    Hill was also disqualified from driving for 16 months.

    In a tweet posted by investigators, they said the owner of the house is "currently been dealt with by officers".

    Police in Leeds say they're trying to find a woman who has not been seen since the beginning of the month.

    Emalyn Pajo was last seen on Duncan Street on 2 April at around 22:00, she'd come into the city to go shopping.

    The 44-year-old has not been seen since.

    She was last seen wearing a blue jacket and light blue trousers.

    A sculpture commissioned to commemorate soldiers from a West Yorkshire town who died in World War One has arrived there today.

    The 20ft tall War Horse, constructed in Bristol, has cost £85,000 and was funded by local councils and businesses in Featherstone near Wakefield.

    It'll sit over Mill Pond Meadow - and is already being welcomed by people there

    A man who used a "laser jammer" - a device that confuses police speed vans - has been jailed after he drove past officers showing them the middle finger.

    Timothy Hill, 67 of Old Mill Lane in Grassington drove past North Yorkshire Police’s mobile safety camera vans on the A19 near Easingwold, Thirsk and Crathorne on three occasions in December.

    Officers began an investigation after realising he was using the jammer.

    He admitted he was the driver and he had fitted the device to his car and he was charged with perverting the course of justice, which he pleaded guilty to at court.

    He was jailed for eight months at Teesside Crown Court today and banned from driving for a year for perverting the course of justice.

    Call handlers at the 999 call centre took this call yesterday at a time they describe as their "peak".

    The team behind the contact centre said, external "This kind of call is more regular than you would believe."

    They added "999 calls are for genuine emergencies only."

  15. Live: Sculpture makes way to Featherstonepublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 23 April 2018

    It's almost here!

    A 20ft-by-30ft steel sculpture is being transported from Bristol to Featherstone, near Wakefield and is almost in position.

    The huge equine structure will straddle a path in Mill Pond Meadow, so people can walk underneath.

    Julie Fielding is raising money for Barnsley Hospice and will fly halfway round the world to attempt the half marathon on 1 May.

    She's pounding the streets of Monk Bretton where she lives, but her house stairs would have some way to go to match the 5008 steps she'll have to cover on the Great Wall itself.
