    Three men from North Yorkshire are setting off for Benidorm today in a 17-year-old Citroen.

    They're doing it to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

    The group from Hunmanby are calling themselves "The Benidorm Bangers" and the car only cost them £100.

    They've got their work cut out though, last year 60 cars drove down there, 10 came back.

    Shares in Bradford based upvc window and door company Safestyle have plummeted after the firm issued a profits warning and announced the departure of its chairman.

    The group said it has been stung by an "aggressive new market entrant" which is eating into its customer base, particularly its sales and canvass divisions.

    Shares crashed 21% following the update and to make matters worse, Safestyle intends to cancel its final dividend of 7.5p a share as it scrambles to strengthen its balance sheet.

    Non-executive Peter Richardson has been appointed as replacement. He said: "I am now looking forward to working with the board and the executive team during what is a challenging period for the group."

    It's been 35 years to the day since Cliff Thorburn became the first snooker player in history to make a maximum break of 147 during a live TV broadcast at the World Snooker Championship.

    The Canadian was playing Terry Griffiths in Sheffield in a second round match, and such was the atmosphere as he approached the top score that players on the other table halted what they were doing to watch.

    Motorists are being warned to look out for emergency vehicles on call-outs after this crash in Bradford yesterday:

    The ambulance was responding to an emergency and had its blue lights and sirens on when the car allegedly pulled out in front of it at about 11:00 on Wheatley Hill.

    The driver of the car suffered bruising and was taken to hospital.

    In a tweet, a road policing officer said, external: "Please be careful when pulling out on emergency vehicles with blue lights and sirens! Look, look and look again."

    North Yorkshire Police officers are investigating a serious sexual assault in the centre of York.

    It happened in the Bootham area of York overnight.

    A 31-year-old man's been arrested and remains in police custody.

    A number of police vehicles are still in the Bootham area this morning.

    A North Yorkshire man is now a world record holder after running the London Marathon at the weekend dressed as a poppy.

    Owen Willis, who's from Scarborough, did it despite the heat dressed in the 5ft-high home-made costume.

    He's now set a new Guinness world record for "fastest marathon dressed as a three-dimensional plant".

    Owen's had to complete the race within five hours and managed to cross the finish line with just seconds to spare.

    Two fire engines have been at the car wash on Wakefield Road in Smithies this morning.

    It seems to have been started deliberately.

    Don't be alarmed if you see a giant horse slowly moving towards West Yorkshire today...

    The 20ft-by-30ft steel sculpture is being transported from Bristol to Featherstone, near Wakefield.

    The huge equine structure will straddle a path in Mill Pond Meadow, so people can walk underneath.

    It was commissioned last year to commemorate the 353 local soldiers who lost their lives in World War One.

    The huge horse is the creation of Bristol sculpture company Codsteaks and weighs about two tonnes.

    Following the surprise defeat of former World Champion Mark Selby, Ronnie O'Sullivan is through to the second round of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible in Sheffield.

    Defending champion Selby was beaten by Joe Perry 10-4, but for Ronnie O'Sullivan the chance of adding another world title to his name lives on.

    Even so, the star has apologised to fans for his standard of play during the first part of his match against Stephen Maguire.

    O'Sullivan trailed 5-3 overnight into Sunday, but lived up to his nickname of The Rocket after winning seven out of eight frames to secure a 10-7 first-round victory.

    A Yorkshire military airfield is one of 15 earmarked for closure over the next six years with the potential loss of thousands of jobs.

    That's the warning from an all-party group of MPs on general aviation, members of whom have written to Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson urging him to consider keeping them open for private planes and allowing them to be brought back into military use if needed.

    The government says the sites, including Dishforth in North Yorkshire, home of 6 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps, will be used to help the local economy.

    Emergency services came to the rescue in Boroughbridge when the wagon's refrigerated trailer full of food burst into flames.

    Fire crews from Boroughbridge, Knaresborough and Ripon, using breathing apparatus, were able to uncouple the cab in time for it to escape any damage.

    It's thought the fire started because of the lorry's brakes overheating.

  16. New £40m wing opened at Sheffield Children's Hospitalpublished at 07:36 British Summer Time 23 April 2018

    Patients at Sheffield Children's Hospital have been transferred to a new £40m wing.

    The new block has three 24-bed wards, two surgical and one medical.

    It also has a specialist burns unit and includes rooms for children who need to be isolated to prevent infections, such as bone marrow transplant patients

    The building also includes en-suite facilities to allow parents to stay with their child.

    Sheffield Children's Hospital opened in 1876 and has provided NHS services since 1948.

    More than £10m of the project was raised by The Children's Hospital Charity.

    Knife crime has surged in Yorkshire while it's actually gone down in London, according to the latest figures.

    The statistics, from the House of Commons Library, show there was a 45% rise in Yorkshire knife crime in the seven years to 2017. In contrast, it went down by 12% in London.

    It comes as £15m has been cut from youth services in eight areas of our region since 2011.

    The Department for Communities and Local Government says it's giving councils more money, more freedom and more certainty over long-term funding.

    The number of rough sleepers in York has trebled over the last four years - and councillors are due to meet today to discuss the issue.

    A breakdown in relationships and a shortage of affordable homes are said to be the key causes of homelessness in York.
