    A horse which is being treated in North Yorkshire after a suspected acid attack is responding well to treatment as a crowdfunding campaign set up to pay for her care tops £11,000.

    Cinders is "doing really well" after undergoing initial surgery to deal with her horrific injuries at Rainbow Equine Hospital in Old Malton.

    She was found dumped in a yard in Chesterfield and the vet treating her says it's the first time they've had to treat a horse for chemical burns.

    Dave Rendle described the suspected attack on Cinders, thought to be just eight-months-old, as "shocking".

    "The fact we knew it was deliberate was hard to take. There were a few choice words said in the office," he added.

    NHS staff and union members at Doncaster Royal Infirmary have been demonstrating their opposition to plans to outsource ancillary staff to a subsidiary company to save money.

    The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust says "no decision has been made" as yet.

  5. Birds trapped in deadly nets 'for days or weeks' - RSPCApublished at 09:26 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Birds are dying on the North Yorkshire coast after becoming trapped in netting used to stop them nesting on buildings or in gardens, a charity has warned.

    The RSPCA says seagulls and pigeons in Scarborough and Whitby have been left trapped for "days or weeks" - and it often leads to them dying.

    The charity warns that "all too often" it is called out to help stuck birds, often relying on the assistance of the fire service to free them.

    Meanwhile, staff at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary say they encounter cases of this kind "every other day".

    The funeral's due to be held this morning of a 22-year-old man stabbed to death in broad daylight in Sheffield last month.

    Jarvin Blake was stabbed in the Burngreave area and died in hospital after the attack in Brackley Street, at about 15:00 on Thursday 8 March.

    He was attacked by a group of men who had got out of a car in nearby Catherine Street and South Yorkshire Police believe he was the victim of a "targeted attack".

    Four men have been arrested but no one has been charged.

    The funeral is expected to take place at about 11:00 at City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

  9. Supermarkets' prices 'will drop by 10%' after mergerpublished at 08:38 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Sainsbury's chief executive Mike Coupe says that by merging with Leeds-based Asda it is aiming to lower prices on "everyday essentials" by about 10%.

    But is that 10% below Asda prices or the more historically expensive Sainsbury's?

    Mr Coupe tells Radio 5 Live: "Both businesses have a programme to invest in price, it's a fiercely competitive market and of course that is great news for customers.

    "So this 10% is above and beyond what both businesses are currently planning to do."

    The weekend once again saw thousands of black-clad folk descend on the North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby for the its Goth Weekend.

    The event, which was first held in 1994, was prompted by the town's association with Bram Stoker's gothic novel Dracula.

    Since 1997, it has been held twice a year, in April and October, and means some strange sights on the town's streets for the more casual passers-by:

    A union rally's being held outside Doncaster Royal Infirmary this morning ahead of an NHS trust board meeting.

    The protest is against plans to set up a subsidiary company into which auxiliary staff including porters and service assistants could be transferred.

    The proposed mega merger between Sainsbury's and Leeds-based Asda begs five very important questions for the boss of Sainsbury's.

    They are CEO's Mike Coupe's to answer because Asda has been doing poorly and its owner Walmart will be glad to be shot of it.

    Sainsbury's owners will be much more sceptical.

    The biggest questions arise around the stated intent to run both brands side by side with few if any store closures.

    Earlier, Sainsbury's confirmed plans to merge with the West Yorkshire firm, which is currently owned by US supermarket giant Walmart.

    The family of a teenage girl who died in a lorry crash in Barnsley have paid tribute to their "bright, caring and beautiful girl".

    The family of 14-year-old Paige Bateman say they're devastated by her death on Friday afternoon.

    Emergency services were called to Doncaster Road following a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle at about 15:00.

    The 30-year-old lorry driver wasn't injured. Police are appealing for witnesses.

    A small boy had to be rescued by the fire service after getting locked inside a pub toilet in a North Yorkshire village at the weekend.

    A fire crew from Northallerton was sent to the village of Osmotherley (pictured) in the Hambleton hills on Sunday to help the youngster.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service say firefighters used "small hand tools to release door and reunite child with his parents".

    Sainsbury's has confirmed plans to merge with Leeds-based Asda, currently owned by US supermarket giant Walmart.

    The supermarkets said that grocery prices would fall in both stores as a result of the merger.

    The combination of the UK's second and third largest supermarkets would create a giant, representing nearly £1 in every £3 spent on groceries.

    Given the size of the two supermarkets, the merger will have to be approved by Competition and Markets Authority.

    York City Knights have set a new rugby league record, beating West Wales Raiders 144-0.

    There were 25 tries in the League One game on Sunday, with the scoreboard at Bootham Crescent resetting when the home side hit triple figures.

    BBC Radio York commentator Andy Atkinson joked he would need a calculator to keep up with the scoreline.

    It was the record score and margin of victory in the professional English game, while York City Knights claim it is a new world record:

  18. Asda and Sainsbury's merger 'must be investigated'published at 06:53 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    The competition watchdog is being urged by politicians to examine the possible merger of Sansbury's and Leeds-based Asda.

    Talks between the two UK supermarket chains are at an "advanced" stage, with more details of a potential £10bn deal expected later today.

    The combined group would comprise 2,800 stores and would represent 31.4% of the UK grocery market - slightly more than that of market leader Tesco.

    The two brands are expected to be retained, should a merger go ahead.

    Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable, a former business secretary, said the Competition and Markets Authority "must investigate".

    Shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey echoed Sir Vince's concerns.
