Labour's leader in Amber Valley has expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the election, but says he remains optimistic about his party's chances next year.

The Conservatives took three seats from Labour to retain control of the borough council.

Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, who represents Codnor and Waingroves, said next year's election will feature 14 seats held by the Conservatives and just one held by Labour, which he feels gives them scope for a comeback.

    Chris Emmas-Williams

He said: "It's a really gutting result. I am very disappointed. I thought that the electorate would see that we had put forward a solid plan for the future and good proposals, but clearly they don't think so.

"It was always going to be difficult, but we'll be back next year to take control, definitely."

The fire service received a call at 12:30 on Thursday lunchtime.

Six fire engines spent most of the day fighting the fire which involved about 30 acres of woodland.

There's little change to the make-up of Yorkshire's councils this morning, with many results from Thursday's local elections now in.

    Election countImage source, PA

In West Yorkshire, Labour stayed in charge in Bradford, with the party gaining Bolton and Undercliffe from the Lib Dems.

In Wakefield, Labour remain in control, but the Conservatives took Horbury and South Ossett from Labour and also took control of the Wakefield Rural ward.

Meanwhile, in South Yorkshire, Labour's still firmly in charge of Sheffield City Council where a third of the seats were being contested, with the party losing three seats on the night.

However, there were gains for the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. But it wasn't a good night for UKIP who lost the only seat the party was trying to defend.

  20. Listen: Council leader calls for 'compromise' in trees rowpublished at 08:49 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Sheffield City Council's controversial tree-felling programme, which is currently suspended, was a key issue in last night's local elections.

In Nether Edge, where trees are earmarked for felling, Green Party candidate Alison Teal not only held onto her seat but beat Labour by 1,300 votes.

The Greens also made gains in City Ward where they hold all three seats, and Broomhill and Sharrow Vale.

The party increased its vote share significantly in Gleadless Valley, which has been the location of several street tree protests by Meersbrook Park - but not enough to take the seat.

Following the election results, the council's Labour leader, Julie Dore, said she's always recognised that in certain wards the trees row would be an issue.

Ms Dore has told BBC Radio Sheffield that there will have to be "compromise" on all sides to allow them to move forward:
