  4. 'Good to be back' - Ex-Bradford council leader wins seatpublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Following yesterday's local elections, there's been little change for West Yorkshire's councils, with most areas remaining under Labour control.

    Ian Greenwood

In Bradford, Labour retained control, with the party gaining Bolton and Undercliffe from the Lib Dems.

That seat saw former council leader Ian Greenwood return to the authority after a six-year absence.

Mr Greenwood said it "feels very good" to be back but it was a "hard ask" to win the seat:

"We always knew we had to work at it, which we did. But I always thought it was possible," he said.

"There were sufficient people who'd demonstrated in the past they were prepared to vote Labour and that if we could persuade them to vote Labour, then we'd be successful."

The Conservatives took Horbury and South Ossett from Labour and also took control of the Wakefield Rural ward.

The council's now made up of 52 Labour and 11 Conservative councillors.

However, turnout in Wakefield was very low, with just over a quarter of people voting in yesterday's elections.

Council leader Peter Box says he wonders if there's "a slight disenchantment with politicians generally" at the moment.

"It is disappointing because people should exercise their democratic right to vote," he says.
