    Developers with planning permission to build 49 houses on a greenfield site in Barnsley want to increase the number of homes on the site, according to the Local Democracy Reporter Service.

    The site, in a field bordered by Pilley Green and Lidgett Lane, was originally destined to be developed into large properties by Barratt Homes.

    The company now wants to build 75 homes in a mixture of two, three or four-bed houses.

    Barratt, external has now started consultations on the altered plans.

    Police want to speak to a group of men after a mother and her son were victims of racial abuse on a train between Leeds and Bingley.

    The woman and a group of four men got on a train at Leeds, which was travelling towards Skipton, on 21 April.

    During the journey the men are alleged to have subjected the woman and her young son to racial abuse.

    The four men left the train at Bingley station.

  6. Halifax Piece Hall refurb wins yet another awardpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    The refurbishment of Halifax's historic Piece Hall has scooped another top award.

    The Piece Hall has been named Project of the Year for Yorkshire and Humber in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) awards 2018, external.

    The title is presented to the scheme which RICS says demonstrates "overall outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment to adding value to its local area".

    The 18th Century cloth trading hall re-opened last year after a £19m restoration.

    The Piece Hall has also just been presented with the Halifax Civic Trust award, has already won this year's international Lighting Design Awards and was named one of the country's top 10 industry, trade and commerce sites in a major new Historic England campaign.

    Finally, it's also been nominated for a Royal Institute of British Architects award to be announced on 24 May.

    There have been just two applications for street parties in Sheffield to celebrate the forthcoming royal wedding, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Den Bank Crescent and Lydgate Court, both in Crosspool, are the only places to ask Sheffield Council for licences to hold street parties on Saturday.

    When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge married in 2011 there were 31 street parties held in the city.

    Harry and Meghan's big day clashes with the FA Cup Final and has not been declared a bank holiday, which might explain the difference.

  8. 'Town are going up!' - Harrogate fans celebrate promotionpublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    If you were anywhere near the CNG Stadium in Harrogate yesterday you wouldn't have been able to miss the fact that something special was happening.

    The noise - and there was plenty of it - was down to Harrogate Town winning promotion to the Vanarama National League for the first time in its history.

    The team beat Brackley Town 3-0 in the National League North play-off final.

    A man is recovering after he was shot in the hand in a drive-by shooting in Leeds.

    The injured 20-year-old went to hospital with the wound at about 21:50 last night, police were called in and he told them he was shot at about 19:30.

    He told them it had happened at the junction of Spencer Place and Shepherd’s Lane, in Chapeltown,

    He said a dark car had pulled alongside him as he walked down the street.

    West Yorkshire Police said the attack was targeted but don't believe it's related to other incidents involving firearms over recent weeks.

  15. Motty pays tribute to 'the people of Sheffield'published at 11:47 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    John Motson, one of the BBC's longest serving commentators who retired at the weekend, has paid tribute to the people of Sheffield where he began his career.

    Motty, as he's fondly known, began his career as a reporter for Sheffield newspaper, the Morning Telegraph.

    He also worked for BBC Radio Sheffield and later BBC Radio 2, before moving to Match of the Day.

    During his career he covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and more than 200 England games.

    Last night, after delivering his final commentary, he was honoured at the British Academy Television Awards, external for his "outstanding contribution to sports broadcasting".

    More than 600 extra foster carers are needed to look after vulnerable children in the Yorkshire and Humber region, researchers have found.

    Five Rivers Child Care, external believes 610 more carers are needed across the region.

    It carried out a survey of 2,000 people to discover what prevents people applying to become carers.

    It found 60% were unaware that foster carers could be paid up to £25,000 a year.

    It also discovered 57% of those questioned were unaware that childless individuals or couples can foster.

    A woman who was injured on the North York Moors has thanked the team involved in rescuing her.

    The woman, who had been walking at the Hole of Horcum on Saturday, had multiple injuries to her lower leg.

    The Yorkshire Ambulance Service had attended but were unable to move her and called the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team., external

  18. Shoppers don't feel safer after city crackdown - Surveypublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    Shoppers in Bradford say they still don't feel safer, despite a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in the city.

    A year ago, Bradford Council started its "exclusion zones" policy in the city centre, meaning officers have the power to remove people who are taking drugs or behaving anti-socially.

    But more than three quarters of people surveyed in the city centre say they either haven't noticed a difference or say they don't actually feel any safer.

    However, police claim there was a decrease in anti-social behaviour in the area over the past year.

    People living along the route of the new Sheffield-Rotherham Tram Train are are being warned to keep away from power lines and tracks as they are "always on".

    New overhead power lines have been installed at Rotherham Central station and along tracks to Parkgate and Tinsley in Sheffield for the Tram Trains project.

    Community Safety Manager at Network Rail, Vicki Beadle, has been visiting local schools to deliver a warning that the electrified lines can be very dangerous.

    "Many people – and not just children – think the overhead line only carries electricity when trains or Tram Trains are coming through," she says.

    "That’s simply not true. The wires are electrified all the time and these ones carry 750 volts. So we are making our message clear – the electricity is always on, so stay off the tracks.

    The project is now in its final stages of construction, including building new low-level platforms at Rotherham Central.

    A much-criticised fountain in York is finally due to be knocked down today.

    The water feature in Parliament Street hasn't flowed since a nearby toilet block was removed - along with the fountain's water supply - in 2012.

    Since then, calls have grown for the fountain to be removed as well, with voices from the heritage, tourism and political sectors all suggesting it's an eyesore which lets the centre down.

    Demolition and repaving will take two weeks with proposals for a replacement feature being promised in the near future.
