    A man has been charged with the murder of a 55-year-old woman in Leeds earlier this week.

    The woman was found dead inside a property on Berkeley Mount after police officers forced their way into the address on Monday night.

    Peter Stalgis, 60, of Berkeley Mount, Harehills, is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court later, police say.

    Selby and Ainsty Conservative MP Nigel Adams takes over from Heather Wheeler in the Communities Department, so she can spend more time with her husband, who's not well.

    Mr Adams is a government whip and will be unpaid in his new role.

    The money raised by the sale of the sign will help pay for medical care no longer available on the NHS for two brothers from West Yorkshire who are being treated for cancer.

    Leo Redfearn, 11, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma last October, while his six year-old brother, Oliver, was diagnosed with stage three non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in January.

    The brothers have adjoining beds in their ward in Leeds General Infirmary.

    More than 1,000 high street shops have closed in the Yorkshire and the Humber region in the last three years, new figures show.

    The statistics, compiled by accountancy firm Price Waterhouse Cooper and the Local Data Company, show the region has suffered the largest decline of anywhere outside of London.

    Sheffield was the worst affected area in Yorkshire and the Humber, with Hull, and Barnsley also seeing a drop.

    Huddersfield has also been hit hard, according to the report, but David Whittle, from Peter's department store in the town, says despite the new findings there is still hope for the future:

    A murder investigation's been launched in Sheffield after the stabbing death of a 19-year-old man.

    Police were called to a block of flats in Tannery Close in Woodhouse at about 23:10 on Tuesday after reports a man had been stabbed.

    The teenager died in the early hours of this morning.

    While formal identification has not yet taken place, his family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, police say.

    A 17-year-old girl and a 22-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    An investigation is under way to find out what caused a building fire last night in Rotherham.

    A total of 25 firefighters tackled the blaze on Doncaster Road in Thrybergh, near Fosters Garden Centre, shortly before 21:00.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says a building about 40m by 20m was well alight when they got there.

    People living nearby were advised to keep windows and doors closed.

    When 34-year-old Ian Berry cleared out the wardrobe at his mother's house he found a pile of old jeans that needed to be sorted.

    Most people would take them to their nearest charity shop, but Ian, formerly known as Denimu, instead shaped them into portraits.

    Berry wants to show his work in the north of England, bringing a touch of what he has shown in sell-out shows in London and Sweden and museums and galleries in the United States.

    "I'd love to exhibit in Huddersfield but I want it to be the right project. I want to reach people who wouldn't normally go to an art gallery, to make an impact," he says.

    If you've ever visited York, you may have seen street performer Purpleman.

    He usually sits stationary on his bike on historic Stonegate for hours on end and thousands of tourists stop to have their photo taken with him.

    An investigation continues this morning after the death of one man in a crash on the A1(M) in North Yorkshire.

    Both lorries burst into flames

    Two lorries burst into flames following the accident between Junction 50 at Baldersby and Junction 51 at Leeming Bar just after 07:00 on Tuesday morning.

    The northbound carriageway was closed for 14 hours.

    Hundreds of drivers were stuck on the motorway for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

    Huddersfield Giants have announced a new four-year contract for young prop forward Matty English.

    The 20-year-old (pictured, centre) has made five Super League appearances after making his Giants debut last season.

    Giants interim head coach Chris Thorman says he believes English is "just going to get better".

    "He's not carved out of granite, he doesn't exactly look like a rugby league player but he is a rugby league player. He just gets it," Thorman adds.

    Investigations are under way this morning after a major fire at industrial premises in South Yorkshire.

    About 40 firefighters tackled the blaze in Dinnington, which involved plastic and other materials, after South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service got the call at about 17:20 on Tuesday.

    People living nearby were told to stay indoors and to keep their windows closed because of the large amount of smoke.

    Early investigations show that it was an accidental blaze, according to the fire service.

    Do you recognise this car or its occupants? The appeal by police follows a burglary in Huddersfield in which several "high value" items were stolen.

    The break-in took place between 13:58 and 14:07 on Monday 14 May when five masked men reversed a black Audi A3, registration DE17 SHZ, onto the drive of a house in Delamere Gardens.

    They then broke into the house and made off with items including a TAG Monaco watch and two Luis Vuitton handbags.

    A woman who says she was sexually abused as a child "made up" up her story to further the English Defence League's anti-Islamic campaign and to claim compensation, a court has heard.

    The woman, now in her 20s, alleges she was sexually assaulted twice by takeaway driver Khurram Javed in 2008.

    Giving evidence at Sheffield Crown Court she said claims she had lied about the abuse were "totally untrue".

    Mr Javed, 35, of Clifton Crescent, in Rotherham, denies the charges.

    A man believed to be Britain's oldest poppy seller has died at the age of 103.

    Ernest Carr spent more than 25 years selling Royal British Legion poppies at a Leeds supermarket.

    The charity said Mr Carr died in one of its care homes in Ripon on Monday.

    He had served with a reconnaissance regiment during World War Two and was awarded a number of medals, including the French Légion d'Honneur.

    Police want to speak to them after a couple were attacked at a Yorkshire train station.

    The unprovoked attack happened at Barnsley station at about 21:00 on 5 May.

    The man and woman were on a train from Leeds to Barnsley when a man walked past, and deliberately bumped into the woman a number of times.

    An argument followed and when the couple got off the train they were assaulted on the stairs to the overbridge.

    The woman was knocked over and the man was punched several times, leaving them with cuts and bruises.
