Wakefield Council was considering shutting down the service, which runs at Castleford Health Centre, and moving it to GP surgeries to save cash, but met strong opposition from a consultation.

The clinic, which is open to people under the age of 20, offers testing for sexually transmitted infections as well as support on issues like pregnancy and contraception.

Concerns were raised by a local doctor who said the closure would affect "vulnerable women" in Castleford and teenage pregnancy numbers could rise as a result.

  11. 'Compromise' sought in Sheffield trees rowpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 30 May 2018

The new man in charge of the controversial tree replacement programme on Sheffield Council says he will try and push for solutions to save the city's trees where possible.

    Tree felling

Councillor Lewis Dagnall took over from Councillor Bryan Lodge two weeks ago as Sheffield council's new cabinet member for the environment.

So far, he's met officers from contractors Amey and he's been meeting with campaigners and seen trees they're eager to save.

Councillor Dagnall told campaigners yesterday he "is listening and is eager to push for a compromise", but only if it falls within the rules of the council's contract with Amey

Tree-felling by the Labour-run authority is part of Sheffield's £2bn 25-year Streets Ahead, external project which has seen about 5,500 trees cut down since 2012.

Council contractors Amey have assessed the felled trees as diseased, damaging or dangerous, but campaigners say healthy trees have also been lost.

  13. Review after concerns over handling of school gun plotpublished at 07:49 British Summer Time 30 May 2018

A review is to look into how different agencies worked before and during a case which saw two teenagers found guilty of plotting a Columbine-style shooting at a school in Northallerton.

A jury heard they were motivated by their "hero worship" of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 13 people and themselves at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999.

The boys, who were 14 at the time, were found guilty last week of conspiracy to murder.

Petrol and a bag of screws were found in an abandoned shack used as a hideout by the older boy and both had downloaded a bomb-making manual from the internet.

Now, a Learning Lessons Review is to be carried out by the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Board executive, which includes the county council's children's services director and a senior North Yorkshire Police officer.

The two cities are in the running along with more than a dozen other cities including Hull, Cardiff, Glasgow, Bristol, Newcastle and the current favourite Birmingham.

The move will see about 300 of the broadcaster's 800 employers moved out of London to the new regional base, while two smaller regional production hubs are also planned.

Channel 4 officially opened the bidding in April and the move will be part of plans to put an extra £250m into its nations and regions spend by 2023.

Mark Burns-Williamson says nearly 70% of women with criminal convictions re-offend, with over a half re-convicted within a year.

New Hall Women's prison in Wakefield (pictured) now holds more than 400 inmates - over 100 more than the national average.

Mr Burns-Williamson says he thinks there's "a crisis in the criminal justice system" and believes there's a "real need to look at ways of reducing re-offending".

He's calling for "mini-prisons" to become the norm for women to allow offenders to stay closer to home - a factor which is known to aid rehabilitation.

It's thought the support, which is now available to NHS trusts across the UK, could transform the lives of 5,000 motor neurone disease patients in the UK.

It's been brought to market as a result of a five-year project involving the city's two universities and Sheffield teaching hospital.
