    Contempt of court laws are designed to protect the rule of law, ensure fair trials - and avoid trial by media.

    Contempt can be committed by a broad range of people and organisations including the press, jurors, and - as we have learned in recent years - social media users.

    The maximum sentence for contempt of court is two years' imprisonment, but it can also be punished with a fine.

    Police have confirmed the pilot of a helicopter which crashed in a field in North Yorkshire near Boroughbridge has died.

    There were no passengers on board and the pilot has not been identified.

    A man charged with the murder of a 19-year-old last week has been remanded into custody after a court hearing today.

    Frank Mvila Kiongaze, 22 of Morland Road, Gleadless, is due to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday 12 June.

    Ryan Jowle (pictured) died from a stab wound in his chest in hospital after sustaining the injury in the Woodhouse area last week.

    A helicopter has crashed in North Yorkshire this afternoon.

    The aircraft came down in a field near Boroughbridge at 13:23.

    The emergency services have not confirmed if there have been any injuries.

    The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has confirmed inspectors have been sent to the scene.

    A road in Otley has been closed because of fears a 20 tonne tree could topple over.

    Experts say the tree on West Chevin Road could fall in the next day or so.

    Police want to speak to this man after a boat was set on fire as a couple were sleeping inside.

    Someone set fire to the boat's canopy at Aspley Marina in Huddersfield last Monday.

    The couple inside were luckily woken up by the fire and managed to put it out.

    Standing by the boat was the pictured man, who called himself Francis, he offered to help find the person who had set the fire and then disappeared.

    More pictures are coming in from the scene of a helicopter crash in North Yorkshire:

    Fire crews and police officers have confirmed they were sent to the scene at about 13:23.

    Police said they could not "confirm any information about casualties".

    The helicopter is said to have crashed into a corn field near Aldborough, close to Boroughbridge.

    Police have cordoned off the area and inspectors from the Air Accident Investigation Branch are at the scene.

    A new bar could be built in a village which has lost both its pub and working men's club in recent years, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    John Thornton wants to create a new cafe and bar in Pilley Pocket Park, in Tankersley, which is owned by Barnsley Council.

    The former Gate Inn pub (pictured) is across the road from the site of the proposed new cafe.

    Mr Thornton, who lives in the village, has already approached Tankersley Parish Council and intends to distribute a newsletter in the area explaining what he wants to do.

    Neither police or fire and rescue crews can confirm that there have been any injuries.

    The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has confirmed it has sent inspectors to the scene and an investigation is under way.

    Police say a motorcyclist has died following a crash in North Yorkshire last night.

    The B1222 at Cawood was closed for several hours after a Suzuki motorbike and a silver Mercedes collided at 17:00.

    The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene, the two occupants of the car were uninjured.

    Backers of Sheffield's bid to host Channel 4's new HQ have admitted to being a "bit disappointed' the city has not been shortlisted.

    Leeds has made it onto the shortlist but Sheffield and Hull did not.

    Sheffield is in the running though to become one of the company's ''Creative Hubs".

    Alex Graham, chair of Sheffield's Doc Fest, said he was a "teeny bit disappointed" but said he was pleased the city was still being considered as a creative hub.

    "I think there's something more exciting about being a 'Creative Hub'," he said.
