Read MoreA natural hair dye based on the blackcurrant waste from the production of Ribena has been created by scientists at the University of Leeds.
Researchers say they can extract natural colouring from the leftover skins of blackcurrants to create sustainable hair dyes.
Some ingredients found in common synthetic hair dyes are known irritants and can trigger allergic reactions which the natural dye shouldn't, researchers said.
The blackcurrant-based dyes should go on sale this summer through a university spin-off company.

A £13.4m scheme to secure the cliffs behind Scarborough's Spa begins today.
The cliff will be reinforced and new drainage measures will be installed.
Paths are also being relaid and there'll be repairs made to the arch structure near the Spa Cliff lift.
Work is due to be completed by Christmas 2019.

A Yorkshire firefighter who was on holiday helped to save the life of a child who was dragged unconscious from a swimming pool.
Stefan Taylor, 34, of Huddersfield, was at a hotel on the last day of his trip to Hisaronu in Turkey on Saturday when the boy was pulled out the pool.
The firefighter, usually based in Dewsbury, said he began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the child while two other people also helped.
After several unresponsive minutes the boy coughed and breathed on his own.

An eight-year-old York boy who has made a list of things he wants to see before going blind has begun ticking them off.
Fred Howe was born with a condition which means it is only a matter of time before he loses his sight completely.
His "to see" list includes being a zoo keeper for a day, going up the Eiffel Tower, swimming with sharks and high-fiving Mickey Mouse.
Fred said he loves penguins and was delighted to get to feed them at The Deep in Hull: "My headteacher arranged a visit and I got to feed them fish and they followed me around and pecked my special penguin badge."
Fred had also wanted to climb to the top of Parliament's Elizabeth Tower and see the Big Ben bell.
The young adventurer, known as Fantastic Mr Fred to his family, was also taken to the Austrian slopes for a bit of sledging:
Fred's mum Karen said it's amazing what he can do with so little sight.
"He takes it all in his stride and this is what we reminded ourselves when we received the news earlier this year that the sight he has is failing," she says.

However, Roger Marsh OBE, from Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, has cautiously greeted the news that the city is definitely on the broadcaster's shortlist.
He said: "Channel 4's decision to include us on its shortlist is a significant achievement given some 30 areas put themselves forward.
"There is still a lot of hard work to do to secure the tremendous prize on offer and we will continue to work with our partners to achieve the outcome we all want to see," he added.
While missing out on the shortlist as a possible location for the broadcaster's HQ, Sheffield is in the running to become one of Channel 4's so-called "Creative Hubs".

Leeds could become the broadcaster's new HQ, while Sheffield could play host to one of its "Creative Hubs", it's been revealed.
The broadcaster's chief commercial officer, Jonathan Allan, said: "It's underlined the huge amount of creativity, innovation and talent right across the UK.
"However we have to move to a shortlist phase and, after careful consideration by the Channel 4 executive team, we've selected 13 cities that are best able to meet our vision for our new hubs in the Nations and Regions," says Mr Allan.
He adds that the channel's executives "look forward" to visiting the cities which are on its shortlist, with a final announcement due in October.

Read MoreChannel 4 has announced a shortlist of the towns and cities where it could move its national HQ - and Leeds is one of them.
The broadcaster says it wants to move 300 staff to three hubs outside London, one being its new national headquarters.
Sheffield is in the running to become one of the company's "Creative Hubs", as is Leeds, but the West Yorkshire city is one of only seven that could also become home to the channel's national offices.
The two locations will now be involved in a second stage where the channel's executives will visit the various cities for presentations and question and answer sessions.
A final decision will be made in October, the broadcaster says.
Leeds has made it to the shortlist of places where Channel 4 could move its national HQ, it's been announced.
Meanwhile, Sheffield has been shortlisted as a possible Creative hub.
