    A mother accused of manslaughter "did not seem to be bothered" about her dying son when medics arrived at her house in Leeds, a court has heard.

    Jordan Burling, 18, was found "very emaciated" on an inflatable mattress in the living room of the Farnley home on 30 June 2016, paramedics told the jury.

    He went into cardiac arrest and died despite efforts to revive him.

    Dawn Cranston denies the charge along with his grandmother Denise Cranston, 70, and sister Abigail Burling, 25.

    Two Yorkshire buildings are today being recognised by Historic England for being at the centre of the suffragette action.

    The coliseum theatre in Leeds (above) which is now the O2 Academy, was known previously as 55 Cookridge Street.

    Now Historic England has named the landmark "a former scene of sabotage and protest for the suffragettes."

    Also included in the 41 places being re-listed across the country is Cutlers' Hall in Sheffield.

    In October 1908, Adela Pankhurst (the daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst) led a demonstration of women attempting to storm the annual Cutler’s Feast there.

    She attempted to enter disguised as a kitchen maid, but was caught and stopped by the police from going any further.

    As an alternative, she made a speech from the Town Hall speaking out about the injustice towards women in society.

  3. Wild mussels 'contaminated with plastics'published at 07:33 British Summer Time 8 June 2018

    Tiny pieces of plastic and other debris have been found in mussels sampled from eight locations around the UK coast, including Plymouth, according to a report published in the Environmental Pollution journal.

    Of the samples of wild mussels from eight coastal locations and eight unnamed supermarkets, 100% were found to contain microplastics or other debris "from human activity".

    The research by scientists from the University of Hull and Brunel University London showed microplastics consumption by people eating seafood in the UK was likely to be "common and widespread", with every 100 grams of mussels eaten containing an estimated 70 pieces of debris.

    More debris was found in the wild mussels from Plymouth, Edinburgh, Filey, Hastings, Brighton, Cardiff and Wallasey, than in the farmed mussels bought in shops.

  4. Rotherham fracking plan: INEOS wins test drill appealpublished at 07:15 British Summer Time 8 June 2018

    A fracking firm has won an appeal for exploratory drilling near Rotherham.

    Petrochemical firm Ineos wants to drill a test well at Common Lane, Harthill. The council had opposed its plan over concerns about the impact on roads.

    Now, a planning inspector has ruled drilling equipment can be installed for up to five years, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

    Campaigners said they were "devastated" by the news, which came after the plans were subjected to a public inquiry.

    Protesters claim the drilling will lead to environmental and safety concerns, including increased traffic and pollution.

  5. Sinkhole and burst pipe close Otley Road in Leedspublished at 07:06 British Summer Time 8 June 2018

    A major road into Leeds is closed this morning as engineers work to repair a burst water pipe.

    The A660 Otley Road in closed in both directions because of the broken pipe and a large sinkhole, between the B6157 North Lane and Victoria Road.

    Yorkshire Water says its engineers have been working since yesterday morning to fix the problem.

    A diversion is in place via Victoria Road, Cardigan Road, B6157 North Lane.

    Police are looking for this man after a racially aggravated public order offence in Harrogate.

    It happened in the Co-Op on Skipton Road on Wednesday when offensive comments were directed towards a member of staff.

    Police want to speak to the man pictured.

    He was wearing a navy blue jumper and tracksuit bottoms at the time of the offence.

    In particular, officers would like to speak with anyone who heard offensive comments directed towards a member of staff.

  7. Don't neglect Armed Forces Day says old soldierpublished at 06:47 British Summer Time 8 June 2018

    At the end of this month Armed Forces Day, external will be held.

    A 97-year-old veteran from Rotherham, Harold Gregory, says people need to acknowledge the day and its significance.

    He joined the Territorial Army when he was 18 and got the call up a few days before World War Two was declared. He recalls that the suddenness of the declaration meant they had no equipment or uniform for more than a month.

    Sharing in the day is something he's keen to encourage.and wants people to realise that the future as well as the past is shaped by the actions of countless members of the armed forces over many decades.

    A woman has died after a house fire in Castleford.

    Police were called to the fire at a house on Westfield Avenue in the town yesterday, just before 09:00, where the woman suffered "significant injuries" and later died.

    Officers say she was the only person present in the house at the time of the fire.

    Enquiries are still ongoing to establish the circumstances, but it is not believed to be suspicious.

    Police want anyone with information about the fire to contact them.
