    Yorkshire's diving champ Jack Laugher has won bronze in the 3m springboard at the Diving World Cup in China.

    It's the Ripon diver's second medal of the event, after his silver with Chris Mears in the 3m synchronised yesterday.

    Harrogate's Oliver Dingley, who represents Ireland, finished in 7th place.

    The Diving World Cup is the biggest event in the year for those in the sport.

    Wakefield-based Poundworld is poised to announce its intention to appoint administrators.

    The move will allow the company up to two weeks to continue talks with potential buyers without the company's creditors being able to make a claim on the business.

    It also allows its staff and suppliers to continue to be paid.

    It is understood that investment company R Capital is in talks to try to buy Poundworld, which has its HQ in Normanton and has 5,300 workers and 355 stores.

    A York-based charity is urging the government to reform the welfare system, after new figures suggested one-and-a-half million people in the UK were destitute last year.

    The findings have been published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which says people are destitute if, over the course of a month, they've had to go without basics such as food and shelter, or have less than £10 a day to live on.

    The government says it's spending £90bn every year to help those in most need and that work is the best route out of poverty.

    Leeds United full-back Tom Pearce has signed a new four-year deal.

    The 20-year-old made his debut for the Elland Road side in March and went on to score one goal in five appearances.

    The England Under-21 international, who would have been out of contract at the end of the month, is currently away with the national side at the Toulon Tournament.

    Leeds finished 13th in the Championship in 2017-18, 15 points off the play-offs and are currently managerless.

    Police have issued a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to about a knife-point robbery at a bar in Leeds

    It happened last Monday at the Neighbourhood Bar on Greek Street at 04:00.

    A man forced a member of staff back into the bar with a knife and told him to open the safe.

    The man then took cash and got away on a bike towards the Headrow, police said.

    The 45th Bramham Horse Trials start today with competitors from 13 countries set to take part.

    The four-day event takes place near Tadcaster.

    Olympic silver medallist Ian Stark says the cross-country fences he's designed will "test horses and riders to the limits".

    The eventing competitions attracts some of the world's top riders, who will be hoping for a share of the £18,000 prize money.

    England play their last friendly before the World Cup at Elland Road in Leeds tonight.

    The match against Costa Rica kicks off at 20:00.

    It is almost a home game for our national team, as seven players are from Yorkshire and manager Gareth Southgate currently lives here.

    England begin their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Volgograd on 18 June, with further Group G matches against Panama and Belgium.

    On a disappointing note, England have only been given a 4% chance of lifting the trophy this year, which puts them behind Peru.

    City of York Council says it's delighted to announce that a free wi-fi system, known as Cityconnect , externalhas been expanded to take in Acomb's Front Street.

    The council says the road serves as a strategic location for the expanding network - it is right in the middle of Acomb, a large suburb of York which has a population of more than 22,000.

    The Duke of Cambridge is in West Yorkshire today to meet the England team ahead of their friendly against Costa Rica, it has been announced.

    Prince William, who is President of the Football Association, is meeting the England squad at the West Riding County Football Association.

    England are playing the Central American team at Elland Road this evening.

    The prince is meeting the team as they prepare for tonight's game.

    It's been announced House of Fraser stores in Skipton and Doncaster are among the 31 shops it plans to close as part of a rescue deal for the struggling company.

    The stores scheduled for closure will stay open until early 2019.

    Creditors will vote on the insolvency plan, which involves company voluntary arrangements (CVAs), on 22 June.

    It happened at about 01:30 on Saturday 19 May when an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted on a grassed area off Eleanor Street in Darnall.

    The woman was asked for money by a man who then grabbed her. She kicked him and he fled the area.

    The York councillor who led a campaign against plans to build a visitor centre at the city's historic Clifford's Tower says he's "stunned" to hear they're being scrapped.

    English Heritage announced the U-turn earlier today saying it's listened to local people's concerns.

    Plans for the proposed £2m visitor centre were approved in 2016.

    A judicial review of the decision was held in 2017, amid claims it was "deeply flawed", but the application was rejected.

  17. Symbolic baton heads to Yorkshire Air Museumpublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    Three imposing aircraft will form the backdrop later when the RAF Baton Relay reaches the Yorkshire Air Museum, near York.

    The event's being held to mark the RAF's centenary this year and uses planes, trains, automobiles, boats...and even feet.

    Yesterday, the baton went from RAF Linton on Ouse to York Minster (pictured).

    The runners left York Minster this morning on its next leg heading towards the museum at Elvington where the handover is due to take place.

    The Baton Relay is going to 100 locations connected to the RAF in 100 days.

    It comes to an end next month at London's Horseguards Parade.

    Tributes are being paid to Sheffield's Peter Stringfellow who has died from cancer at the age of 77.

    He rose to fame after working in a potted meat factory by setting up a number of music venues, the first of which was The Black Cat in Sheffield.

    English Heritage says it still wants to improve visitor facilities at York's historic Clifford's Tower despite scrapping its controversial plans for a new visitor centre at the foot of the landmark.

    The organisation says it's changed its mind due to the strength of public opposition and because of a new £30m city centre development plan.

    English Heritage's proposed single-storey visitor centre at the 13th Century tower was described by one objector as reminiscent of a "toilet block".

    Andrea Selley, from English Heritage, says despite scrapping the plans, the organisation remains "completely committed to improving visitor facilities at the tower":

  20. Labour members demand legal action ends over tree protestspublished at 09:21 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    Labour Party members in Sheffield have passed a motion demanding that legal action against four tree campaigners is withdrawn immediately.

    The party members, from the Crookes and Crosspool areas of the city, also want Sheffield City Council not to pursue further injunctions.

    A High Court hearing continues today, as a judge considers whether four people breached an injunction when protesting against the cutting down of trees in the city last year.

    Yesterday, defendants said they were "confused" as to where the safety zones were and that the barriers were extended around them.
