    • In 2014 its football team drew 0-0 with England in the Word Cup group stage on the way to the quarter-finals.

    Three anti-tree felling campaigners in Sheffield have avoided jail sentences after they were found in contempt of court for breaching an injunction.

    The injunction stopped them going inside work safety zones during controversial protests.

    Creative writing lecturer Simon Crump, songwriting magician Benoit Compin and retired primary school teacher Fran Grace were found in contempt by a judge at the High Court in Sheffield.

    It followed a three-day hearing of an action brought by Sheffield City Council.

    The judge, Mr Justice Males, gave both Crump and Compin a two-month prison sentence, suspended for one year.

    He decided no further punishment was appropriate for grandmother Grace, to applause from the public gallery.

  6. MP vows to fight fracking decision in Rotherhampublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    An MP has vowed to fight the decision to allow fracking company INEOS to move forward with exploratory drilling at a village near Rotherham.

    Today a planning inspector has ruled in favour of the company's proposals to drill test for shale gas in Harthill.

    Sir Kevin Barron, the Labour MP for Rother Vallery, said he was "very disappointed" with the ruling.

    A West Yorkshire MP has suggested he and his colleagues should discuss how out of touch they are with public opinion.

    Philip Davies, the Conservative MP for Shipley, made the proposal and it has been backed by the Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom

    She said it would be a "great subject" for debate.

    She was responding to a warning by Mr Davies that Commons was out of touch over the European Union, prisoners and overseas aid.

    He said a debate would show if there is "anything at all" where MPs are in step with public opinion.

  8. Water burst shuts main road in Leedspublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    A main road in Leeds is to stay shut for the next two days because of a burst pipe.

    It's happened on the A660 Otley Road in Headingley, and has caused part of the road to give way.

    Yorkshire Water say it's a serious burst and part of Headingley Lane has had to be closed and diversions have been set up.

  9. Royal visit for England squad ahead of Elland Road matchpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    The Duke of Cambridge was in West Yorkshire this morning to meet the England squad ahead of their final friendly at Elland Road before the World Cup.

    Prince William, who is president of the Football Association, met manager Gareth Southgate and captain Harry Kane before speaking to the players at West Riding County Football Association.

    The Prince also praised full-back Danny Rose for speaking publicly about being diagnosed with depression, which was sparked by a lengthy injury lay-off and a death in the family.

    "It's really good what you did, it's really brave of you," the prince said.

  10. Help for Sheffield food bank 'in the can'published at 15:27 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    Artist Pete McKee is helping a food bank in his hometown of Sheffield - by designing artwork for a limited edition tin.

    It's being done to help the S2 Foodbank, external.

    The cans, although they're empty, are expected to become collectors' items thanks to Pete McKee's popularity.

    The idea is that people can get one of the 200 cans, external in exchange for things they'll donate to the food bank.

    Officials at Oliver's Mount, external in Scarborough say they're confident they will be able to stage this summer's Barry Sheene Festival.

    The road race course has had to cancel the Cock O' The North event later this month, because it doesn't meet strict new safety rules.

    The Barry Sheene Cup is due to take place at the end of July.

  12. Tree campaigners did breach Sheffield injunctionpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    A judge at the High Court in Sheffield has ruled three people are guilty of breaching an injunction designed to stop protesters disrupting the removal of trees in the city.

    Judge Males ruled that Simon Crump, Fran Grace and Benoit Compin were all guilty.

    They will be sentenced later.

    England play Costa Rica tonight at Elland Road in their last friendly game before the World Cup starts later this month.

    It's not the first time England have visited the home of Leeds United, though

    England last played there in March 2002 when they were beaten 2-1 in a friendly by Italy.

    They also drew 3-3 against Sweden in June 1995

    Elland Road's been selected by the FA for tonight's match because Yorkshire has a lot of England Supporters Club, external members, it appears.

    England manager Gareth Southgate said the team's visit would let them get "to the heart of the communities" which support the national team.

  15. INEOS wins fracking appeal in Rotherhampublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 7 June 2018

    An appeal by fracking company INEOS for exploratory drilling at a site in Rotherham has been successful.

    The company went straight to appeal after it became concerned about the time it was taking for Rotherham Council to make a decision over the plan for the site near the village of Harthill.

    The council had opposed the plan on highways grounds.

    The site can only be approached by country lanes and the council was concerned increased traffic could only be managed by the use of a series of passing places.

    INEOS had tried to persuade residents to support the plan by issuing a leaflet explaining what it wanted to do.

    The University of York has been granted one of the highest awards for teaching standards.

    The institution has been rated as Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework - it was previously rated as Silver.

    A gold rating means education provision is "consistently outstanding and of the highest quality found in the UK Higher Education sector."

    England defender Danny Rose, who's originally from Doncaster, has been speaking candidly about suffering from depression.

    The 27-year-old star is expected to feature for his country tonight against Costa Rica in a World Cup warm-up match in Leeds.

    Rose says he was struggling with rehab for an injury when a family tragedy happened.

    His uncle took his own life and Rose says it sent him further into depression.
