  1. 'Respect our railway': Vandals threaten unique tramwaypublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    Volunteers on the famous Shipley Glen Tramway in Bradford, the oldest of its type in the world, say a recent spate of graffiti, arson and theft is putting the attraction under threat.

    They're asking users to respect the historic nature of the site near the village of Saltaire, which is itself a World Heritage Site.

    Richard Freeman, who volunteers as the tramway's treasurer, says: "The extent of the damage is shocking.

    "People try to set fire to the seats, break the seat backs, do whatever they can.

    "It's quite incredible that people would want to damage a heritage item like this," he added.

    The Shipley Glen Tramway, which opened in 1895, is the only cable tramway in the country and is the oldest of its kind anywhere in the world.

    It's a funicular railway which means it is pulled on a slope by a cable.

    The Wakefield-based National Coal Mining Museum for England is marking its 30th anniversary with a day of special events.

    Created out of the former Caphouse Colliery, the museum opened in 1988.

    Visitors are guided through the 460ft-deep mine by former miners who explain the realities of mining through the centuries.

    Since it opened, deep pit coal mining in Britain has come to an end with the closure of Kellingley in 2015.

  4. Four years of roadworks begin on York Ring Roadpublished at 08:08 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    Four years of roadworks start on the York Outer Ring Road today as seven roundabouts are upgraded to try and cut congestion.

    The work's starting at the Wetherby Road roundabout (pictured) which is being widened, with three lanes for traffic approaching it, and a two-lane exit.

    There'll be a 30mph speed limit through the roadworks.

    Similar improvements to six other roundabouts on the ring road are also set to take place.

    The work's costing £38m, with the money coming from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's Transport Fund.

    A family of geese brought the busy A1 in Yorkshire to a standstill after walking on to the northbound carriageway.

    Traffic officers held vehicles near Catterick for about 30 minutes on Saturday while the geese were herded, if that's quite the right word, off the road.

    After the road re-opened, Highways England tweeted that about 20 geese had been moved "to greener pastures".

    It's been suggested that the birds were admiring the new section of recently opened motorway between Leeming and Barton.

    "Just taking a gander..?" said a Highways England spokesperson...

    Two people have been charged in connection with a man's stabbing in Mexborough, near Doncaster, last week.

    The victim, who was 22-years-old, suffered stab wounds in the incident which happened at about 14:55 on Thursday on the Hartley Street roundabout.

    A 16-year-old boy and a 25-year-old Mexborough man have been charged with wounding.

    The man has also been charged with possession of a class B drug.

    Both of them remain in custody, say police.

    A 29-year-old woman, also from Mexborough, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, has been released under investigation.

    It's 25 years since Scarborough's Holbeck Hall hotel collapsed into the sea after a landslip.

    Over the course of three days, starting on 3 June 1993, an estimated one million tonnes of clay fell in to the North Sea.

    The British Geological Survey said the likely cause of the landslip was a combination of factors including heavy rainfall, poor drainage and the local geology.

    Yorkshire's rail users are getting their first taste of a new emergency timetable this morning, following major disruption since new timetables were introduced last month.

    It's expected to be in place until at least the end of July.

    Northern has cancelled 165 daily services after it failed to keep up with new schedules introduced a fortnight ago.

    The company insisted it will still run more trains than it did before the timetable change on 20 May, and expects to "get back to a full timetable service" by the end of next month.

    Casey Mcardle was last seen in Harehills at about 22:10 last night, heading towards Seacroft.

    She was wearing a light pink jumper, dark blue jeans and a blue jacket.

    Anyone with any information is being urged to call West Yorkshire police.

    If you're making a journey on the rails in Yorkshire today, it's worth noting there's an amended timetable operating across some parts of the Northern network., external

    It follows the removal of 165 out of the normal 2,800 daily services until the end of July.

    Otherwise, services operating to and from Yorkshire's main stations seem to be running pretty much to time just now.

    However, the 06:45 York to Plymouth service has been cancelled and the 06:59 Wakefield Westgate to Leeds service is currently running six minutes late.

    A man has been charged with the murder of a 73-year-old woman found stabbed to death at her home.

    The body of Jill Hibberd was discovered in the living room of her house in Roy Kilner Road in Wombwell, near Barnsley, on Thursday.

    A post-mortem examination found she died from multiple stab wounds.

    Lee Trevor Fueloep, 40, of Willow Garth in Wombwell, has been charged with her murder.

    He's due to appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court later today.

    Mr Fueloep has also been charged with one count of burglary.
