'Respect our railway': Vandals threaten unique tramwaypublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 4 June 2018
Volunteers on the famous Shipley Glen Tramway in Bradford, the oldest of its type in the world, say a recent spate of graffiti, arson and theft is putting the attraction under threat.
They're asking users to respect the historic nature of the site near the village of Saltaire, which is itself a World Heritage Site.
Richard Freeman, who volunteers as the tramway's treasurer, says: "The extent of the damage is shocking.
"People try to set fire to the seats, break the seat backs, do whatever they can.
"It's quite incredible that people would want to damage a heritage item like this," he added.
The Shipley Glen Tramway, which opened in 1895, is the only cable tramway in the country and is the oldest of its kind anywhere in the world.
It's a funicular railway which means it is pulled on a slope by a cable.
