    It might be a little early yet for chants of "It's coming home!" to be taken too seriously, but England are at least finally on their way in the World Cup 2018.

    England's win against Tunisia last night in their first match certainly went down well with fans at the O2 Academy venue in Leeds yesterday evening.

    Here are the celebrations after Harry Kane's second goal which saw the match end Tunisia 1-2 England - and here's hoping there are similar celebrations to come:

  2. Strip club boss claims club makes Sheffield 'safer'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

    The Spearmint Rhino strip club makes Sheffield safer, according to a senior manager, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reports.

    John Specht, vice-president of Spearmint Rhino UK, said security staff at the Brown Street venue offer a friendly and mature presence on the street outside and the club's lighting also makes the area safer at night.

    His comments were made as Sheffield City Council considers if the club's sexual entertainment venue licence should be renewed.

    Mr Specht said about 40 entertainers are employed within the club and many have been there for a decade.

    There have been hundreds of objections to the licence, including from neighbours Sheffield Hallam University.

  3. Poundworld axes 100 jobs at Yorkshire HQpublished at 10:38

    Poundworld has axed about 100 jobs from its head office in Normanton as administrators struggle to find a buyer for the business.

    The budget retailer, owned by private equity firm TPG Capital, collapsed last week, putting a total of 5,100 jobs at risk.

    Poundworld's administrator Deloitte has now been forced to make about 98 staff redundant at the company's head office in Normanton, near Wakefield.

    A woman who stabbed her step-grandfather more than 120 times with a steak knife on Christmas Day has been jailed for life.

    Lindsey Fletcher, 39, also beat 72-year-old Michael Eaton with his walking stick at his Doncaster home.

    She claimed he tried to sexually abuse her like he did when she was a child.

    During the four-day trial, the jury heard drug-addict Fletcher, of St James Street, Doncaster, stripped Mr Eaton's body naked and doused it with bleach.

    She then took her 12-year-old daughter with her to dispose of his clothes.

    A cyclist is hoping his pedal power is up to it as he attempts to reach speeds above 127mph at Elvington airfield near York today.

    Neil Campbell, 42, is trying to set a European cycling speed record, riding a custom built bike worth more than £10,000, attached to the back of a car by a bungee cord.

    At about 70mph the cord is released and Neil says that's when he "has to go for it."

    If he succeeds he’ll be the fastest man on two wheels across Britain, Europe and the Commonwealth.

    Police in West Yorkshire say Jonathan Carroll, from Leeds, who was the subject of an earlier missing persons appeal, has now been found "safe and well".

    Officers say they'd like to thank everyone who helped in locating him.

    A 16-year-old boy is in a serious condition after being stabbed in Ecclesfield over the weekend.

    It happened on Sunday morning at about midnight outside Player's Lounge on Yew Lane.

    Police say the boy was taken to hospital with stab wounds to his upper body.

    About 50 people were near the sports bar at the time and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

    A cat from Sheffield, which has the ability to alert its owner to the onset of debilitating seizures, has been shortlisted to become Britain's 'hero cat', external.

    Two-year-old Toby, who's a ginger tomcat, is owned by Annette Sterlang-Burton.

    She suffers from functional neurological disorder, which causes memory and mobility problems as well as the seizures.

    Toby senses when Annette is about to suffer a blackout enabling her to prepare herself and her children.

  10. City centre 'entrance charge' to be £50published at 09:07 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

    More details about plans to charge some vehicles a fee to enter Leeds city centre are being announced today.

    Drivers of buses, coaches and HGVs will have to pay £50 a day to enter the proposed Clean Air Zone - down from the initial proposal of £100 a day.

    The charge will only apply to vehicles with higher emissions.

    Leeds City Council plans to introduce the zone in 2020.

    American superstar, Lionel Richie, is performing at the Scarborough Open Air Theatre, external.

    Europe's biggest open-air theatre is hosting a series of concerts this summer - including performances by Britney Spears, Il Divo, and Gary Barlow.

    Before playing the Glastonbury festival in 2015 Lionel Richie said he couldn't understand why the British stage outdoor festivals.

    Perhaps he was concerned about missing the chance to do some Dancing on the Ceiling!

    Three people have been arrested after another man died in Barnsley town centre at the weekend.

    A man in his 30s died in the Eldon Street area of Barnsley after suffering a head injury on Sunday 17 June.

    A 43-year-old man detained on Monday remains in custody.

    A 27-year-old man and a woman, 32, have also been arrested in connection with the death on suspicion of theft.

    Police say the death is being treated as suspicious.

    Police in West Yorkshire say they're "concerned for the welfare" of a 28-year-old man missing from Leeds.

    Officers say Jonathan Carroll, from the Wortley area, has not been seen for several days.

    They're appealing to anyone with information about his disappearance to contact them.

    A lap dancing club in Sheffield will find out today if its operating licence will be renewed.

    The club, on Brown Street, has operated for 15 years but needs to renew a sexual entertainment venue licence to remain open.

    Its licence was renewed in April 2017 despite almost 100 objections, many on the grounds of gender inequality.

    Sheffield City Council has received more than 150 objections to the club's licence application this year.

    MPs, Sheffield Hallam University and local businesses have all expressed concerns.

    Campaigners will call on councillors not to renew the license at a meeting later today, external.

    Former North Yorkshire MP Lord Hague has called for a "decisive change" in the law on cannabis, suggesting the Conservatives should consider legalising the drug.

    Writing in the Daily Telegraph, external, he said the government's approach is out of date, pointing to a 12-year-old with epilepsy who was admitted to hospital after his medical cannabis oil was confiscated.

    The former Conservative leader says: "The law is indefensible and beyond ridiculous."

    Lord Hague said licensing cannabis for medical use would be a "step forward", but also said the Conservatives should be as "bold" as Canada where state-regulated recreational consumption is being considered.

    The government is creating an expert panel to look into individual cases.

    A doctor who asked a patient about sex positions and told her to bring sex toys to a surgery has been struck off.

    Huddersfield gynaecologist, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed, also watched the female patient undress and did not allow her to cover her lower body during the consultation.

    Dr Ahmed worked at Princess Royal Community Health Centre where the incidents took place in 2013 and 2015.

    The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) found he was guilty of sexual misconduct.

    He was found to have abused his position of trust and was banned from the medical register for life.
