What was actually happening over Ampleforth was the appearance of clouds which are the most common explanation for UFO sightings around the world.

They're called called Altocumulus Lenticularis clouds and are formed when air moves over the top of hills or mountains.

As the wind cools it condenses and becomes a cloud, but lenticular clouds are different from other clouds in that they don't move in the sky.

While the cloud stays in place, it is shaped by new air rising up, making the cloud smooth and round.

So there you go. The next time you think the aliens are on their way in North Yorkshire, don't panic, there is a perfectly good scientific explanation.
