    Rail passengers on Northern services are facing further disruption with a fresh strike in a long-running dispute over guards on trains.

    Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union are staging a 24-hour stoppage, with further walkouts planned for Thursday and Saturday.

    The company said it would run as many services as possible between 07:00 and 19:00.

    The union claims imposing driver-only services is a risk to public safety.

    The mother of an emaciated 18-year-old man told a work colleague he had been seen by various doctors and they "couldn't work out what was wrong".

    Jordan Burling died after going into cardiac arrest in the lounge of his house in Farnley, Leeds, in June 2016.

    His mother Dawn Cranston (pictured above right), 45, told fellow Poundland employee Laura Thomas her son was "very ill and bed-ridden" earlier the same month, Leeds Crown Court heard.

    The prosecution alleges Jordan had not been to see a GP "for some years before his death".

    His mother, grandmother Denise Cranston (pictured above left), 70, and his sister Abigail Burling (pictured above centre), 25, all deny manslaughter.

    They also deny an alternative count of causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult.

    The trial continues.

    A man has been charged in connection with an attack on a 96-year-old man who was pushed to the floor and robbed in Doncaster last week.

    The victim was approached on Great North Road, Woodlands, on Wednesday 13 June, by a man offering to sell him a garden strimmer

    The elderly man agreed to buy the strimmer, but after getting cash to pay for it he was pushed to the floor and he suffered a head injury.

    A 37-year-old man has been charged with robbery and assault and is due to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on 13 July.

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service is urging fans not to drink too much alcohol during tonight's game.

    Staff warn that heavy drinking increases the risk of accidents and assaults, including domestic violence.

    Police are trying to trace this man after two women were sexually assaulted while they waited for a taxi at Leeds station:

    The women were inappropriately touched by a man while they waited in the taxi queue at the station just before midnight on Saturday 19 May.

    Det Con Dave Bentley, from British Transport Police, says: "After reviewing CCTV we have identified a man we'd like to speak to about what happened.

    "I'd urge anyone who knows who he is to contact us."

  9. 'Beast of Wombwell' Peter Pickering died of natural causespublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    A convicted child killer dubbed the "Beast of Wombwell" died of natural causes, an inquest has heard.

    Peter Pickering, 80, stabbed and strangled 14-year-old Shirley Boldy in Wombwell, near Barnsley, in 1972 and was suspected of murdering Wakefield schoolgirl Elsie Frost in 1965.

    In March he was convicted of raping a woman weeks before he killed Shirley, and was waiting to be sentenced.

    He was at Thornford Park psychiatric hospital in Berkshire when he died.

    Speaking after Pickering's death, Elsie Frost's brother Colin said the family felt they had been "cheated" out of getting justice and believed Pickering could be responsible for other murders.

    The inquest at Reading Town Hall heard Pickering died at Thornford Park on 25 March where he had been held since 2014 after being moved from Broadmoor.

    Members of the RMT union are due to hold another strike tomorrow in a continuing row with rail operator Northern about driver-only trains.

    The trade union is calling for last minute talks to try and resolve issues between the two parties.

    The union argues passenger safety would be put at risk by getting rid of guards and extending driver-only services.

    Tomorrow's planned strike comes at a time when Northern is facing mounting pressure over disruption caused by implementing a new timetable.

    Northern says it's committed to delivering a modern service for customers.

    The stopper looks set to leave Leeds with two years left on his contract.

    Frankfurt's sports director Bruno Hubne has confirmed they are in talks.

    Selby Conservative MP Nigel Adams is due to meet the rail minister tomorrow Jo Johnston over calls for step-free access to the town's railway station.

    TransPennine Express, which runs the station, says it's "reviewing" use of the level crossing, which staff can use to take passengers using wheelchairs, or who have pushchairs, across the tracks.

    Disabled passengers say they can't change platforms at night while the station is unstaffed.

    TransPennine says it's bidding for money to install a lift.

    A police car which hit and killed a pensioner on a busy Sheffield road "came out of nowhere", a coroners' inquest has heard.

    Leslie Bingham, 73, from Malin Bridge in Sheffield, was heading to a family gathering at the Owlerton greyhound stadium when he was hit by the marked police car on Penistone Road.

    He died from multiple injuries.

    One witness said that the traffic lights where Mr Bingham was crossing were on green for traffic.

  18. Kilnhurst recycling plant fire 'accidental' - Fire servicepublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    A major fire at a recycling plant near Rotherham overnight is believed to have started accidentally, according to South Yorkshire Fire Service.

    At its peak (pictured), 12 fire engines and about 60 firefighters tackled the blaze at the site on Wharf Road in Kilnhurst.

    Two businesses, Universal Recycling and Moulding Solutions Ltd, operate out of the site.

    Motorists in the area were earlier warned to "keep vehicle windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep air vents closed" as a result of the blaze.

    Investigations into the fire will continue throughout the day, according to the fire service.
