'Trojan bus' operation targets stone-throwing youthspublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 29 June 2018
An operation where undercover police officers ride on buses has reduced the number of stone-throwing attacks on vehicles, police say.
There were 56 incidents of criminal damage involving First Yorkshire bus services between October and December – an average of seven per week.
The cost of repairing damaged buses a year is around £70,000, the company said.
Since the officers were introduced, the number of attacks have dropped to three a week in east and south Leeds, West Yorkshire Police said.
Staff from First West Yorkshire have also been talking to Year 7 and 8 pupils, who are the age group most likely to be involved.
The police said these kind of attacks on buses, and other vehicles, present "obvious dangers" to drivers and passengers.
Quote MessageThe recent operations that have taken place using the Trojan Bus tactic have led to a significant drop in the number of incidents and we hope the bus-using public will be reassured by that."
