There were 56 incidents of criminal damage involving First Yorkshire bus services between October and December – an average of seven per week.

The cost of repairing damaged buses a year is around £70,000, the company said.

Since the officers were introduced, the number of attacks have dropped to three a week in east and south Leeds, West Yorkshire Police said.

Staff from First West Yorkshire have also been talking to Year 7 and 8 pupils, who are the age group most likely to be involved.

The police said these kind of attacks on buses, and other vehicles, present "obvious dangers" to drivers and passengers.

Who hasn't dreamed of a dip in a cool swimming pool over the past few days of sweltering weather in Yorkshire?

This tawny owl in North Yorkshire certainly had the right idea - taking a quick and refreshing swim:

It was caught on camera at the Robert Fuller Gallery in Thixendale on Thursday.

Robert says: "These birds are nocturnal and rarely come out to bathe like this in daylight.

"But what is particularly unusual is to see a tawny owl drinking.

Police say "ongoing vendettas" mean victims won't talk to them as they're part of organised crime groups.

There's been a recent spate of knife crime incidents in South Yorkshire which have left victims, including a teenager, dead or badly injured.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson said: "Most knife crime is done by young people. My message to parents is: Do you know what your children are doing? Have you had this discussion with them? It is very much a team effort."

  13. Fire service warning over budget cutspublished at 08:11 British Summer Time 29 June 2018

Budget cuts will almost certainly hit frontline services, North Yorkshire Fire Service has warned.

    North Yorkshire Fire

The service says it's facing a shortfall of £2.5m over the next four years.

The savings need to made by 2020 and could cost the equivalent of about 40 full-time firefighters.

Councillors have been told that although losing firefighters would be a "last resort", it cannot be ruled out if other savings don't work.

The county's fire authority has also discussed letting full-time firefighters retire without replacement, relying more on temporary workers and cancelling some new building projects.

  14. Leeds tops fast food league - Reportpublished at 07:42 British Summer Time 29 June 2018

Leeds has more fast food restaurants than any other council area in England, new figures show.

    Burger

The statistics, from Public Health England, reveal that there are 957 eateries selling food such as burgers, pizzas and kebabs in the city.

More than a quarter of restaurants across the country sell fast food, the report shows.

Blackpool also has the highest density of fast food outlets with 232.2 per 100,000 in England.

At least 40 local authorities in England now have policies to restrict the growth of new takeaways, Public Health England says.

Wakefield Council announced plans to ban new takeaways opening on routes to and from schools earlier this week.

    Quote Message

It's not surprising some children find it difficult to resist the lure of fast food outlets when many neighbourhoods are saturated with them.
